For years, some people have been asking, “When is Smallville going to end? Isn’t he Superman yet?” Well, the series ending is now in sight. But who’s decision was it?
When Smallville began, it revolved around Clark Kent (Tom Welling), a high school student who was discovering his super powers. As time has gone on, he’s learned how to use his abilities and is now balancing his heroics with his work at the Daily Plant newspaper. The show’s current cast includes Allison Mack, Callum Blue, Cassidy Freeman, Erica Durance, and Justin Hartley.
Last season, The CW network moved Smallville from its usual Thursday night timeslot to Fridays. The ratings understandably dropped quite a bit but the network still renewed the show for a 10th season. The renewal had supposedly been hinging on whether or not Welling wanted to keep doing the series.
The decision has now been made that season 10 will be the show’s last. The network was supposed to make an official announcement at the upfronts but Welling jumped the gun and told HollywoodLife at an event on Tuesday night. The actor also reflected on what he’s learned by playing Clark Kent for so long. He said, “Once you think you have perfected things, you’ve got to keep practicing. There is always something to learn! It works for me and it will work for others.”

It remains to be seen who made the decision to end the show. Did the network decide to cancel it or was the choice made on the production side? Unless Welling (who’s now 33-years-old) decided that he’d had enough, it likely comes down to a mixture of the two and simple economics. The show will have been around for 10 seasons, has gotten more expensive to produce, and doesn’t bring as much ad revenue anymore.
On top of that, there are certainly more than enough episodes to keep the show running in syndication for a long time. By the end of the show’s run, there will be enough installments for a station to play once a day for seven months without repeating.
By announcing the ending a year in advance, the network can promote Smallville’s season 10 as the last and the producers will have ample time to plan how they want to wrap things up.

Smallville has been a great show it has gotton better every season I have watched it from the begenning I think it would be a shame for it to end after just 10 seasons.. I hope everyone will reconsider..Kristen Kreuk is my favorite actor..she has played Lonna very well.. I hope the network can work something out this has been the best show for the Superman saga yet…..

Why not have a season 11 made of smallville? What was the point of making Icarus waiting until hawkmans death then all the rest of them standing in that temple burying him then a bright light emerged from the ground. Then all of them went to sleep. Out of all the season’s I watched it happens like this? That is major ********. What was the point of making that episode where (Tom Welling) known as (Clark Kent) where he was in 2017 in the future? About where Zod shown him his better life with Lois Lane. IT NEEDS CLARK TO BECOME THE MAN WE ALL LOVE “SUPPERMAN” and PUT ON THE REAL SUPPERMAN COLORS… I FOR MYSELF WAS GETTING AWAY FROM TVs SMALLVILE DO TO THE SAME OLD THING AND CLARK LOOKING LIKE A 2nd. I watch Smallville since the beginning, and according with other readers, more the show go on, more it make it better. Consider that Smallville is appreciated also in other Country (like in my case). Would be a real pity if the season 10 will be the last.
I watch smallville, I got my wife and son to watch it too. I do have to say Clark did fly in season 4 episode 1. I think if the ratings suck due to it being on Friday..than why did you move it from thurs? I wish this show can go on and on and onto a movie. I think Tom Welling is an awsome superman and is now type casted and should continue as superman weather its a new series Metropolis or even a superman movie reboot – sup man of steel 2012? hey, just because people dont watch smallville when it airs on tv it doesnt mean that few people like or watch it, alot of people also watch it on the internet like hulu or downloading it from a website, My idea for smallvilles next big hit is that they should start a brand new series for smallville using same actors maybe something like the justice league or something, would be greatly appreciated by lots of people, i mean who doesnt love comics and superheroes u guys should give it a shot at least 1 season. i agree i love smallville 2. why cant they end it on season 11. or even a chance 2 end it on season 12. there is still a hole lot more of superman 2 tell than just 10 seasons. they havent even brought in darkside yet. the justice league havent even bring batman. if u r going 2 make a season 11 throw off green arrow and throw in a batman for one of the main charactors. use christain bale or something and bring back pete johns, jimmy olsen, and supermans cousin. then the show would have a lot more… Read more »

I have been watching Smallville since the beginning and I believe show has only gotten better over the years. I would love for it to go on forever but I guess there is an end to everything, but at least give the people another two seasons. There is really no good way to wrap this show, but if there were two more seasons instead of one, it would give the opportunity to end it at least half decent.
