The ratings may be low but The CW isn’t breaking up with Crazy-Ex-Girlfriend. The Friday night TV show has been renewed for a third season which will air as part of the 2017-18 season.
On the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend series, Rebecca Bunch (Rachel Bloom) was dumped by Josh (Vincent Rodriguez III) after a summer camp romance because he felt she was overly dramatic and a little crazy. Some 10 years later, Rebecca’s a Yale and Harvard educated lawyer who’s been offered a partnership in a top New York firm. She and Josh run into each other and her feelings for him are rekindled. He’s moving back to California and she impulsively decides to do the same. Has anything really changed? The rest of the cast includes Santino Fontana, Donna Lynne Champlin, Pete Gardner, Vella Lovell, and Gabrielle Ruiz.
A romantic musical comedy, the ratings for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend were quite poor last season and they’ve gotten even worse now that The CW has moved it to Friday nights. Season two is currently averaging a 0.20 in the 18-49 demographic with 553,000 viewers. That’s down by more than 30% year-to-year.
While the series hasn’t attracted great ratings, it’s one of the few CW shows to attract much critical attention. The series has a high Metacritic score and Bloom won a Best Actress Golden Globe last year.
Today, CW President Mark Pedowitz said, “When you have great critical work and a critically acclaimed and award-nominated show like this, it deserves to be picked up… It has nothing to do with numbers. It has everything to do with [how] Crazy Ex, Jane the Virgin and the DC franchises have helped alter the perception of what The CW has become.”
The CW also renewed six other TV shows today — Arrow (season six), DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (season three), The Flash (season four), Jane the Virgin (season four), Supergirl (season three), and Supernatural (season 13).
We already know that Reign and The Vampire Diaries are ending this season. No Tomorrow and Frequency are expected to be cancelled and The Originals’ future will likely be decided once the ratings come in for the upcoming fourth season, starting in March.
What do you think? Do you like the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend TV show? Are you glad that it’s been renewed for a third season or, should it have been cancelled instead?
Love the show! Please make new season asap!!!
I loved it so much. I want CW to make more seasons. I’ll be waiting for more. 🙂
I love this show. The characters, story lines, and music are so unique & entertaining. So happy it will continue.
Love it!!!
I love this show so happy for season 3!
This is crazy feminist BS and is about as “intellectual” as a tomato. All the men in it are fools, while the women are the touchy-feely heroines who hug every 5 seconds. The writers have few ideas, so bring in new characters to stir things up, but each new character to the show predictably is only a love interest causing them to doubt their relationship. (That’s intellectual to you?) Josh is made to be a fool (whilst speaking with a well-spoken accent) and all the “bro’s” are such stereotypes. This show really is not about entertainment, but to try to… Read more »
I think that is the whole entire point of this show. It is ironic and picks fun at the flaws in modern culture. If you take this show or any of the characters seriously you’ve read too deeply into the show. Rebecca and everyone is so exaggerated to show that any extreme way of thinking mixed with an unhealthy dose of denial is a recipe for disaster.
It’s blatant satire lol
Yeah it’s so annoying because this is how it’s been for the last century. Women have only acted in strong, complex, and empowering roles while men always have to take the secondary and tertiary, demeaning “love-interest” roles. Oh wait. Just a few thoughts & questions: – I am surprised that you, the apparent “gatekeeper of UK syndication,” are angrily commenting about “child liberals” on a Saturday afternoon. Is this part of your job? – Do you know what feminism is? – I kind of want the writers to rename the show and call it,”Crazy Feminist BS”. – Speaking of the… Read more »
I am so glad Crazy X Girlfriend got renewed! I love this show an all the characters in it are awesom!!
I can’t wait for the 3rd season! OMG I love this series.Always chasing through the web to find new episode. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Europe loves you!
LOVE Crazy Ex-Girlfrien!! So happy it was renewed for a third season
I love Crazy ex-girlfriend. I’ve watched it since the beginning and I love it. But I don’t want her to marry Josh. I’m glad that it got renew .i love this show and The CW.
The show is great, very funny and artistic although it may seem like another romantic comedy show at the first glance. Really happy it got renewed
I love this show.
I LOVE this show! I’m so happy it’s being renewed again! I love the songs and the comedy is top knotch. It’s a refreshing show to just have a good laugh, but you end up rooting for characters. It’s good writing, no matter what the ratings say.
I LOVE this show. It’s stupid comedy and I like it. I could do without all the songs though. I’m happy they renewed for another season.
Disgusting. The show is averaging a 0.20 in live ratings, which is an abomination, considering 0.00 is as low as you can go. There’s just nobody there with the nuts to fire these incompetent people who get away with making incompetent decisions like this. A total disgrace.
A lot of people won’t watch a show if its intellectuality goes over their head and I think this show does that. It’s very niche, which is strange considering musicals and comedies are usually so popular. It deserves more attention and it deserves a third season (preferably with Santino Fontana reprising his role as Greg). Don’t be so negative. Enjoy it.
Yes, please bring back Greg! I love the songs and find myself not only singing them but creating my own new songs for my daily life. This show brings me joy. Sometimes it’s hard to watch because you’re just like REALLY?! and then you cannot stay away long because you care for the characters.
