As it stands right now, President Tom Kirkman is stepping down tonight. ABC has cancelled the Designated Survivor TV show so there won’t be a third season on the alphabet network. However, there are efforts afoot to find the series a new home. Would you watch Designated Survivor on another channel?
A political thriller, Designated Survivor stars Kiefer Sutherland, Natascha McElhone, Adan Canto, LaMonica Garrett, Kal Penn, Maggie Q, Malik Yoba, Paulo Costanzo, Zoe McLellan, Ben Lawson, Tanner Buchanan, and Mckenna Grace. The conspiracy drama series centers on Tom Kirkman (Sutherland). After an attack on Capitol Hill wipes out the line of succession, this HUD Secretary becomes President of the United States. In Designated Survivor, season two, President Kirkman is on the hunt for the terrorists who destroyed the Capitol, even as he handles the daily Oval Office crises.
The Designated Survivor series debuted in September 2016 to very strong ratings but the numbers fell over the course of the first season. It ended up averaging a 1.25 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.84 million viewers — about half the ratings of the series premiere. The series could have been cancelled but ABC gave it another chance and ordered a second season.
Season two got off to a decent start but the ratings quickly dropped and have kept on falling. The second season is currently averaging a 0.71 demo rating with 3.95 million. To no surprise, ABC cancelled Designated Survivor last week.
There has been talk that the show’s producer, eOne, is shopping the series to other outlets. Netflix is considering picking up the series but that option is not without its challenges.
Moving a show to a new outlet is an expensive and risky prospect since there’s no guarantee that fans of a cancelled show will follow the series to its new home.
What do you think? Would you follow Designated Survivor to a new channel or streaming service? Would you watch season three elsewhere?
I’ll follow it wherever it goes. What a colossal blunder by an otherwise fine network. Perhaps ABC will regain their senses and standards and change their obedience to the god of ratings.
. Totally bummed it was cancelled. I will follow it on Netflix
I’ll follow it! I already watch it on Hulu the day after it airs anyway, so it’d be great if Hulu decided to pick it up. It’s a great show with intelligent writing and great acting, it needs to be
Designated Survivor should be saved by ABC. I would unfortunately not follow it to Netflix or a streaming service. I am oldschool and want to support network TV.
Why support the networks when they recycle old shows, like the reboot for Magnum, PI CBS is doing that looks awful, and cancel good shows like this one? Designated Survivor would thrive on Netflix or Hulu.
Great show, good material, good acting, I love watching it. Whatever network it’s on wouldn’t matter.
ABC is on a roll. They have cancelled so many good shows, but keep the mediocre ones. Designated Survivor was one of the best, and should definitely be brought back!
Great way to put it! It’s as though they have a guru whose operating procedure is, “This is a finely acted, wonderfully plotted and directed series. Let’s cancel it and show cheesy sitcoms instead!” (“Paved paradise and put up a parking lot.”)
My husband and I really enjoyed watching Designated Survivor. Didn’t miss a single show. I guess the “powers that be” would rather be watching Will & Grace–just don’t understand. PLEASE RETHINK DECISION TO CANCEL.
After so many years of US presidents who have been mediocre to disastrous, the people of America finally has something that shows them what a real president should be. Please, please don’t take that away from us
I love Designated Survivor and I think it should be continued.
we need this show to remind us of what a president should be rather than the one we do have,
Phyllis, if this isn’t the understatement of the year,
I don’t know what is!
Please DO NOT cancel this show….one of few best shows ever! I’d watch it on any channel or network….just bring it back!! Thank you!
I would like to see Designated Survivor on a channel that I carry at home.
They cancel this great show but keep all that fake reality, silly sitcoms and dancing shows … Wake up people are tired of that mess … At least let the show end with dignity instead of a cliffhanger ..
Yes, save the show! Excellent, thought-provoking and thrilling. I would follow it to another station. Please save Designated Survivor!
Yes many us who watch Designated stand by this show. It is one of best shows on TV. This show should not be cancelled.james
