In the network’s commitment to get out of the “sitcom business,” the CW has cancelled Everybody Hates Chris. There won’t be a fifth season but luckily series creator Chris Rock beat them to the punch.
Everybody Hates Chris is loosely based on Rock’s early life and features Tyler James Williams, Terry Crews, Tequan Richmond, Tichina Arnold, Imani Hakim, and Vincent Martella.
The show’s been around for four seasons and its viewership has been in decline for awhile. It certainly didn’t help that, this season, the CW decided to strand the sitcom on little-watched Friday nights. Added to the fact that Chris doesn’t exactly match the network’s targeted demographic, it was obvious that the show’s days were numbered.
Rather than take a chance on not being able to give the show a proper ending, Rock decided to finish the show on his own terms. The season four finale revolves around Chris dropping out of high school, just as Rock did in real life. If the series had returned for year five, it could have explored his journey to do stand-up but as it is, the season finale still works as a last episode. There’s even a not-so-subtle nod to the famous Sopranos finale at the end.
Williams is currently pursuing a film course at New York University and is satisfied with the final episode. He told TV Guide, “If it ends here, we ended it the right way.” Rock agreed, saying, “It might not be a bad way to go.”
Are you upset or glad that the show won’t be back for season five?

I’m from Brasil and I love the sitcom. I’m so sorry it ended. It was an inteligent entertrainment
man everybody hates chris was a excellent show i was looking forward to season 5
why couldn’t they just stop on season 8 or something this is so disopointing
I am incredibly upset that this show is over. i really wanted to know what else happened to chris. and i didn’t like the ending, i was very confused with it. I think there should be a season 5 but shorter than previous seasons.
Upset…..the finale given was not fair to the fans. The creators should’ve put their emotions aside and should have applied due diligence to the finale. Even though the show was not returning for another season. The show did not end on a great note. Everybody Hate Chris was overall a great show, but the finale sucked.
to my surprise the new season of Lincoln Heights starts August 4th…..we will see if they keep it on…..they should……
THE CW is going to be like UPN….they are going to loose all of their viewers!!!!!
@ ND Mitchell….Lincoln Heights is just as well cancelled because the last new episode (or any episode for that matter) was last year….I highly doubt they are bringing it back….it was a great show but nowadays they cut off black sitcoms…..
Back in the day, there was Good Times, Amen, That’s My Mama, Sanford & Son, the Cosby Show, the Jeffersons, Family Matters, What’s Happening, What’s Happening Now, A Different World, and other series that stayed on the air for the longest time. Since then, there has been Half & Half, Girlfriends, the Parkers, One on One, the Hughleys, All of Us, and just recently Everybody Hates Chris and the Game has been added to the list for cancellation. I guess good African-American TV series will never remain on the air long..well, there is at least one last show left..Lincoln Heights… Read more »
one on one was a very good show. Brings back alot of memories
its a shame how the cw keep canceling all the black shows. Everybody Hates Chris is a great show. it has a great cast and its funny. Another good show bites the dust. If these other stations had sense they would pick this show up.
I hate the fact when ever a black show get cancels it up with a cliff hanger. When can we get a proper ending for the black shows? I want to know if Chris passes the GED exam, argh… I actually liked Everybody Hates Chris! 🙁 I am sadly disappointed.. now what am I supposed to watch in the fall?
I watched the show from the very beginning and loved the fact that it showed a black family intact with the father as head of household. Not only did it send a positive message, it was FUNNY. It always amazes me that the White shows can stay on for years past their prime, but the black shows are always cancelled while in theirs. I know viewership is important and if I can watch and enjoy “Two and a Half Men” or “The Big Bang Theory”, surely there are viewers of other persuasions that can enjoy comedies with a majority black… Read more »
they always do stuff like that, personally i dont want to watch shows like 90210 or reeper
that is soo true and it is a shame
The CW is annoying…they spend all this time devoted to the same cookie cutter shows like 7th Heaven and recreating old shows with young white actors who apparently don’t live in a diverse world with other people of different ethnicities in main roles…and then they cancel shows that cater to other ethnic groups who are terribly marginalized….truly unfortunate.
That’s a shame
