Despite continuing low ratings, FOX renewed The Last Man on Earth TV show for a fourth season. Season four can be a dangerous time for low-rated TV series. While 100 episodes still may be the gold standard for syndication, in recent years, packages with 88 episodes or so (i.e. four seasons of around 22 episodes each) have sold well. However, this sitcom has had shorter than average seasons. A total of only 49 episodes were produced during its first three installments. Could that low count help it snag another pickup? Will The Last Man on Earth be cancelled or renewed for season five? Stay tuned. *See update below.
A FOX post-apocalyptic comedy, The Last Man on Earth stars Will Forte, Kristen Schaal, January Jones, Mel Rodriguez, Mary Steenburgen, and Cleopatra Coleman. After a deadly virus devastates the planet, Phil Tandy Miller (Forte) believes he’s the last human alive. Eventually, he finds other survivors and alternates between misery and elation. In season four, to avoid nuclear fallout, the survivors set sail for Mexico, even though none of them know how to pilot the boat. They also have to squeeze in two new passengers, Pamela (Kristen Wiig) and her dog, Jeremy.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
5/7 update: You can see the latest night’s ratings in context.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
For comparisons: The third season of The Last Man on Earth averaged a 0.89 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 2.124 million total viewers.
Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you still like The Last Man on Earth TV show? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a fifth season on FOX?
5/10/18 update: FOX has cancelled The Last Man on Earth so there won’t be a fifth season. Details here.
I can’t even vote here because I watched all 3 seasons on netflix in just a few days and voting is on season 4 episodes. I don’t watch TV at all. Haven’t in 10 years. Love the show. A few times I laughed so hard my eyes ran..and that’s rare.
So people like you watching it illegally or not bothered to watch when shown then comment that it shouldn’t be cancelled yet you are aiding to it being cancelled!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@gentrycfc
how is streaming on Netflix illegal???
Last Man On Earth is a BRILLIANT show. Fingers crossed it comes back for a 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, etc season.
Love this show so much! We just started watching it on Netflix – was chef all 3 seasons in 4 days. Can’t wait to watch season 4. Keep it going.
My husband and I absolutely love this show, as well as all my friends! I think our rating system is antiquated since most people I know in my demographic don’t watch regular scheduled programming anymore! We stream and we sometimes wait until there are a few episodes to binge watch. If great shows are getting canceled because of an old system, something needs to change. The demographic of people still watching “TV” might not appreciate the humor in Last Man as much. Please keep it on!!!!
Keep this thing going! The writing reminds me only of the brilliance Community had.
This is a subtle show, so the ratings are low. sure. LMoE is one of those shows that will be appreciated in time.
This is so true. I feel like it’s going to end up like Freaks and Geeks. This show is amazing. There is no way they will be able to find anything to replace it.
I love this show and want it to stay on the air for season 5
I LOVE this show!
The show is so funny and good I really feel like this is going to play out like Firefly , slow start and then a huge boom. Please keep it going I want 5 more seasons and so does my boyfriend!
Let the show keep going
Very funny show keeps me laughing. Need more
I love this show. I started binge watching on Netflix. It’s hysterical! Please don’t cancel!!
I seriously binge watched it and realized I ran out of seasons… pretty depressing lol
I love the show though I agree the humour isn’t for everyone (it’s definitely “if you can’t make ’em laugh, make ’em cringe” humour). Think the show is a bit like marmite – you love it or you hate it.
I think you just need to give it some time. You grow into the humor and then it is all you ever want.
Definitely renewed for a fifth season, I like it so much!!!
♥ Last season was a bit ruff. This season is back in all its Glory.
♥ Love the cameo appearances!
♥ I refer to this show as modern day “Gilligan’s Island” which is going to this day decades later.
♥It seems the show responds to suggestions made in comments = very interactive & respects fans.
✌ PEACE +LOVE
this show is painful to watch.
Maybe you should find a stronger watch. Boom. Still got it.
