In the fall, Anna Faris left Mom, and now, the long-running sitcom is leaving CBS. The network has announced that the comedy series is ending and that the series finale will air on Thursday, May 6th.
The Mom TV series stars Allison Janney, Mimi Kennedy, Jaime Pressly, Beth Hall, William Fichtner, and Kristen Johnston. Recovering addict Bonnie (Janney) must learn to adjust to life without her daughter and former-roommate, Christy (Faris), around. With a chaotic past behind her and a newly empty nest, Bonnie focuses on her marriage to her husband, Adam (Fichtner), and on what she wants to be now that she’s finally grown up. Now more than ever, Bonnie depends on the support of her friends, including wise Marjorie (Kennedy), wealthy and sometimes misguided Jill (Pressly), overly emotional Wendy (Hall), and her foster sister, Tammy (Johnston), who was recently released from prison. Through it all, these women help each other overcome their mistakes and stay sober in the face of whatever life throws their way.
The eighth season of Mom averages a 0.62 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.07 million viewers. Compared to season seven, that’s down by 22% in the demo and down by 19% in viewership. Seven episodes have aired thus far.
Season eight marks the final year in a two-season renewal from CBS and marks the end of star Janney’s current contract. Despite Faris’ departure, the sitcom still does well for CBS and is the network’s fourth-highest rated comedy.
“For the past eight years, we’ve had the great honor to bring these wonderful characters to life, sharing their struggles and triumphs with millions of viewers every week,” said executive producers Chuck Lorre, Gemma Baker, and Nick Bakay in a statement. “From the beginning, we set out to tell stories about recovery from alcoholism and addiction that are rarely portrayed in a network comedy series. Whether it was the emotional reactions of the live audience on tape night inside Stage 20, or discussions at the White House regarding the opioid crisis, or the personal stories we continue to receive on social media, we take great pride in knowing Mom has positively impacted so many lives. We are forever grateful to our brilliant cast and guest stars, wonderful writers, and amazing crew for going on this journey with us.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of the Mom TV series? Would you have watched a ninth season or, is it time to say goodbye?
I would love for this show to continue
Truly sorry the show is ending; miss Anna’ Faris/ character but with the inspired writing and new characters, it was still a great show to watch and my husband and I look forward to each episode!
It’s ridiculous to have such a highly regarded, well scripted show taken off the air. Obviously, the producers don’t care what the dedicated fans of this show want. UNBELIEVABLE! Don’t understand this decision at all…except that it’s a bad one!
I’m a MOM addict. I LOVE all the characters And the writers have done an awesome job of giving each of the characters some twist and turns so that we can stay interested in them and not expect the same responses and or the same conclusions of their problems. That’s what life is all about anyway. I miss The Christy character but Allison Janney is remarkable in her role and is carrying season eight very well. The reason I have watched for all these years and stayed with it is because once those characters beat their addictions, they were people… Read more »
I enjoy the tv show Mom, so of Course CBS is canceling it. Sadly, network shows are less and less appealing- streaming is more appealing as time goes by. Ana Faris left. Why she did will probably never be known, but she was probably tired of being the loser on the show. And maybe some of the rest of this Fantastic ensemble feel the same way. I like that their struggles are shown, but maybe a few successes could be, too. The daughter role could be recast or replaced in that now empty bedroom by a young person of color.… Read more »
I think that Mom should have stayed on air the ratings are still good the program was a great help too many people it was in a sense a public service to all women in recovery. I really think that they should listen to us and bring the show back. I recall one series that was going to be canceled and when the public came out and said please don’t do that we love this show we’re loyal fans they decided to keep the show. I believe that Chuck was afraid that the ratings would go down after Anna Faris… Read more »
AMEN!
Why are they doing this? Did Allison Janney want off? The loss of viewership was small compared too many other shows that remain on schedules. These ladies are still teaching us lessons in humility, love, loss & real friendship. Bad decision powers to be.
Anna Farris’s character Christy was my least favorite character on the show! Mom to me was always about Allison Janey’s character. She and the others are who made this sitcom funny!! Can’t wait to see what Allison Janey will do next! Could care less what Farris does, never thought she was that funny to begin with!
What is wrong with CBS???? the keep horrible shows and cancel great shows. How disappointing. It has a great cast and great stories. I think they should ask people to vote for their shows.
Oh no, I’m devastated. One of my favorite shows, always recorded. The ladies and Adam are wonderful. Please don’t do this
Nooooooooo why they are ending it ….I miss Faris but bring her back in season 8 ….I loveeee this series. From starting …plzzzzz don’t stop
Mom is great! It was still successful even after Anna Faris left. I believe there are many out there struggling who found great comfort in Mom-something they could count in every week to bring them strength and hope and laughter. I feel very sad that this weekly hope will be lost.
Sorry that it’s ending but I don’t think it was as funny this season without Anna. I don’t think wrapping all the stories around either Bonnie or Jill helped. The other characters weren’t included like they might have been. Sad that it’s ending though.
I really do love Mom and am sad that it is not going to be renewed. The writing was great and all the actors are just fabulous. Great job you all.
The viewing percentage went down because we’re dealing with a pandemic! The new season didn’t start up in the fall. I, myself, went on line several times to find out when and if there would even BE a new season! The subjects portrayed (and discussed) are very relatable. The actors and writers are extremely talented and believable.
Don’t judge them because the viewing percentage dropped. It would not have dropped if life was NORMAL! But it’s NOT normal right now! Please, please renew this series!!
