CBS viewers have seen three of the network’s dramas cancelled in recent weeks. NCIS: Hawai’i, So Help Me Todd, and CSI: Vegas (above) will not return with new seasons in the fall. CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach revealed the reasons behind the decisions made to cancel the shows.
Ultimately, the cancellations happened for the usual reasons — money and viewership. Per Variety, Reisenbach said:
“It is incumbent on us to always keep the schedule fresh, keep momentum going. We had to make some really tough choices this year. Everything came back [from the Hollywood strikes] really strong, but ultimately we have to look at the cohesiveness of the schedule flow. We have to evaluate the financials and the performance overall, and we make tough decisions.”
Vanessa Lachey, Alex Tarrant, Noah Mills, Yasmine Al-Bustami, Jason Antoon, Tori Anderson, and Kian Talan star in the NCIS Hawai’i series which follows the NCIS office at Pearl Harbor under the leadership of the first female Special Agent in Charge. Word is that the studio was willing to make deep budget cuts and other concessions to secure a fourth season renewal of the expensive series, but CBS still opted to cancel the drama.
As for So Help Me Todd, CBS president and CEO George Cheeks called the cancellation of the series “heartbreaking.”
Marcia Gay Harden, Skylar Astin, Madeline Wise, Tristen J. Winger, Inga Schlingmann, and Rosa Arredondo star in the So Help Me Todd series which follows the relationship of a mother and son as they work together to solve crimes.
CSI: Vegas was also cancelled by CBS, but a new addition to the CSI franchise is currently in development. Per Deadline, Reisenbach said, “I definitely think that franchise is alive and well and we continue to be in discussions. It’s a part of our legacy.”
Starring Paula Newsome, Marg Helgenberger, Matt Lauria, Mandeep Dhillon, Ariana Guerra, Lex Medlin, and Jay Lee, CSI: Vegas follows the Crime Scene Investigation team as they work to solve crimes in Las Vegas.
Could viewers see any of these shows saved by Paramount+, as has happened with shows like SEAL Team and Evil? As far as the trio of recently cancelled shows, Reisenbach said no.
The chances of that happening are always slim. Cheeks said, “Budgets are challenged, so we don’t have an unlimited number of slots on Paramount+. It’s something that we’re always open to, but it’s never a guarantee.”
What do you think? Have you enjoyed any of these three CBS shows? Which would you save from cancellation if you could?
So Help Me Todd was set up to fail. It deserves to come back in a better time slot and a larger audience will find it and love it.
NCIS HI is a good show with good ratings. It should continue to air. Cancel some of the other garbage, reality shows, etc. No interest in Origins. Great female leader and crew. You’re making some women pretty angry.
Also, something fishy here. When I downvoted a couple comments it showed my vote, but also added an upvote. Your system doesn’t work right.
WHICH SHOW IS NCIS HAWAII, WHY BECAUSE IT IS GREAT DRAMA IN HAWAII. MAKES FOR REAL CROSSOVERS WITH THE OTHER NCIS. NOW ONLY SYDNEY NCIS COULD EVEN BE CROSSED OVER WITH NCIS NOW. ONLY IF THE SHOW STAYS ON CBS NOT PARAMOUT PLUS. ORGINS CAN NOT BE CROSSED OVER WITH NCIS UNLESS IT IS IN SOME KIND OF DREAM. ONLY STAR TREC SHOWS CAN GO BACK IN TIME.
CBS had pre-determined Todd was not coming back. CBS waited 28 days between the airing of Todd episodes, then after 2 shows finally ran 7 days apart, announced Todd’s cancellation. How can a show grow when episodes are delayed 28 days apart? CBS then announced their full schedule for 2024-2025 just a scant few hours before Todd aired on May 02, 2024. Todd Fans are not giving up and if the CW picks up Todd, I will make it a point of prioritizing CW programming over CBS.
This is the perfect storm for So Help Me Todd to move to the CW. Ironically, the CW features many Canadian shot series and Todd is shot in Vancouver. Not impressed by the reasoning given by CBS, they have fallen into the trap of ratings and are not actually considering how healing shows like Todd, Hawaii and Blue Bloods were for their Fans.
I like all 3 shoes and am sad to see them go. BUT So Help Me Todd needs to be saved!! It is well written, always fresh, GREAT cast, continuously great episodes week after week and is a PURE delight in a mix of current so-so television!! Young and old alike can relate and enjoy this show!! SAVE SO HELP ME TODD!!!!!
I would save So Help Me Todd! That show makes me laugh and the cast is perfect. I don’t have Paramount+, but I would sure watch it if someone else picked it up. We need more shows like this.
I watch all three & have differing reasons for why they appeal to me in different ways. Todd was my goofy fun show I saved it to watch at the end of the night for a laugh. The other two have female bosses which is always a good thing. Lastly I live in Vegas & spend time in Hawaii so I love the locales & seeing places we go. I would like to see any of them go to Paramount. Or bring them back when the replacement series fails.
You put SHMT in the toughest time slot intentionally. Against a show that’s been running for 20+ years. You don’t give it a fighting chance. It’s a great show and you could care less what your viewers want. Just worry about your $$$
I think the cancellation of NCIS:Hawaii is total bs. They’re ratings were good and solid. There’s something else going on here. Oh yeah”Stupidity “
I thoroughly enjoy NCIS HAWAII and respectfully request that you find a way to continue this show.
Please renew So Help Me Todd. Put on Paramont + if need be. Great show! Entertaining, well written, great cast, I can say enough about this show.
Save So Help Me Todd!!! Please
Please don’t cancel So Help Me Todd!!!
Any chance that So Help Me Todd will be revived? I think it’s a great show.
I love NCIS Hawaii.Heard the ratings were really good so this show needs to be saved
