Matthew Rhys is coming to HBO. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Americans star has joined the network’s upcoming Perry Mason reboot series.
The limited series will focus on Perry Mason (Rhys) as “a low-rent private investigator haunted by his wartime experience in France and suffering from a broken marriage.”
HBO has not yet announced a premiere date for their Perry Mason reboot, but you can read the logline below:
1932, Los Angeles. While the rest of the country recovers from the Great Depression, this city is booming! Oil! Olympic Games! Talking Pictures! Evangelical Fervor! And a child kidnapping gone very, very wrong! Based on characters created by Erle Stanley Gardner, this limited series follows the origins of American fiction’s most legendary criminal defense lawyer, Perry Mason. When the case of the decade breaks down his door, Mason’s relentless pursuit of the truth reveals a fractured city and just maybe, a pathway to redemption for himself.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of the original Perry Mason series? Will you watch the HBO reboot?
I’m a Perry Mason fan and The American’s fan so getting to see Matthew Rhys as Perry Mason is the best of both worlds! I’m looking forward to Spring and the new TV show!!
While I agree that Raymond Burr is the definitive Perry Mason, the “original series” isn’t actually the original series. There were six movies in the 1930’s where Perry Mason was played various actors. Matthew Rhys is a really good actor and this could actually be good.
I will watch it and give it a chance. I’m excited that the show will be set in the 1930s, as the books are. I’m looking forward to checking it out.
The wrong actor for the role, I love Perry Mason and Raymond Burr. I understand wanting to do a reboot but look what happen to the reboot of Ironside didn’t even make 3 epidodes. So if you are going to pick and actor you have to do better than Matthew Rhys for the role .
Not a chance. I still watch the original and I’m sure this won’t be as good.
No, I won’t be watching it. I think that it is a great insult to the original series Perry Mason. If Erle Stanley Gardner & Raymond Burr could see this great tragedy they would both roll over in their graves.
I think Matthew Rhys will be fantastic as this classic character and will make his own Perry Mason role most memorable for us HBO viewers. I hope the show is well written too to do justice to this iconic character of American TV mystery and drama shows.
I love the old Perry Mason series and still watch reruns. I can’t imagine Rhys playing Perry. I’ve read all the books too. Was a real fan from a young child.
Bad idea. There can only be one Perry Mason show on television. Do the show , but with a different name. Raymond Burr will always be known as Perry Mason.
No, that is an insult to the original series.
I agree 100%. This would be a great insult to the original series.
