Although it just premiered on PBS last night, the Prime Suspect: Tennison TV show has been cancelled after only one season, by ITV. A prequel to the Helen Mirren police drama, and adapted from the Lynda La Plante novel Tennison, the Prime Suspect: Tennison TV show aired on the UK network as Prime Suspect 1973.
Prime Suspect: Tennison stars Stefanie Martini as Jane Tennison. The ITV and PBS TV series cast also includes: Sam Reid, Blake Harrison, Alun Armstrong, Ruth Sheen, Jessica Gunning, Andrew Brooke, Nick Sidi, Geraldine Somerville, Geoffrey Streatfeild, Nancy Carroll, Rosie Day, Lex Shrapnel, Jay Taylor, Jacob James Beswick, Joshua Hill, Daniel Ezra, Tommy McDonnell, and Jordan Long.
Mirror reports:
ITV’s Prime Suspect prequel has been axed after just one run, despite pulling in six million viewers.
The decision not to reorder the retro series, set in 1973, comes after an unfortunate fallout with author Lynda La Plante .
It starred Stefanie Martini as a younger version of Helen Mirren’s character Jane Tennison, when she was a rookie PC.
La Plante had originally been lined up to adapt her novel Tennison for the channel, but later quit the production, citing artistic differences.
At the time she claimed to have been left “very sad” by the fallout, but declined to say what sparked it.
ITV drafted in another writer with bosses saying they were “grateful” to Lynda for allowing them to adapt her “brilliant book”.
She has since penned a follow-up novel, Hidden Killers, which sees Tennison as a detective in the late 70s. But ITV said there were no plans to adapt it.
“We’re very happy with the performance of Prime Suspect 1973 but not everything is meant to run and run,” said one source.
What do you think? Did you watch the Prime Suspect: Tennison TV series premiere on PBS? Will you keep watching, even though you know this TV show is cancelled?
I am so saddened to be reading this!! I was really looking forward to series 2; the story line and acting: excellent! A BIG disappointment.
I was very sorry to find out that this program was canceled. It was so well done.
The acting was exceptional. I find it so amazing that the British can bring in actors that someone like myself have never seen before and put together so fine a piece of work. I hope everyone will reconsider and have this program go on into more seasons.
Really enjoyed this programme, more please, please, please.
I watched three episodes and am saddened that there aren’t going to be more! I thought Stephanie did a wonderful job as Tennison. Given my admiration for Helen Mirrin that is, indeed, a compliment. Hope somehow this can be rescued!
This show is good and deserves at least one more season.
It is truly unfortunately that ITV will not be continuing Prime Suspect: Tennison 1973. I found this mini-series to be extremely engaging; well written, acted, and paced. It pulled in over 6 million viewers, so I don’t stand alone in my assessment. It has been sited that artistic differences with the writer/creater of the Prime Suspect books was the main reason for cancellation. The producers really need to find a way to smooth these differences! We sustain such a loss because of them. Its upsetting that great programming like this is cancelled, especially because there’s a shortage of such high… Read more »
I am not amused!!! ITV lift your game!!! I order you to at once to give us a second season of this marvellous show!!! Young steffi has pulled off a wonderful performance. Yet another instance of management not using their brains!!!
I’m ready for another season, too bad it’s been canceled, hoped for more!
Aw, shucks! I really liked this show. Wonder what the “artistic differences” were — the show turned out more than fine.
I loved Stefanie Martini as Jane. As well as Sam Reid and the whole police cast. (I thought the actors playing Kath Morgan and the Sergeant were especially good.) I bought each episode. I’m watching the series over again now, and I see a good deal of nuance that I missed the first time. Too bad for ITV and Lynda LaPlante that they don’t see it the way 6 million viewers do.
I am disappointed the Tennison series has been cancelled. I thought the acting was good and the period details were excellent. There were episodes with over-acting, but my interest was held throughout. I hope Amazon Prime or Netflix will step in and resolve the issues with the author. Would love to see a Season 2. And more!
Again, I ditto Leslie’s comments below…so sad and I do hope that Netflix will be able to bring it back!
I watched one show and thought it was one colossal mistake to use the younger girl..who was very in effective in her lack luster performance. I didn’t watch it again
Oh here we go again, cancelling really good tv shows after one or two seasons and wasting money on really bad shows full of celebrity wannabee’s, it feels like tv companies only want to cater for the 18 to 30 demograph when it’s us older ones who stay at home to watch tv as we have been there and done the going out thing
Agreed; I watched all episodes and just checked to see when season 2 would start…thought it was a great show!
Extremely disappointed.
How unfortunate…..Just getting started. All the bad TV these days, this was a winner!
