Showtime is trying to fix it. The cable channel has announced that the cancelled Ray Donovan TV series will return as a movie. The story will pick up where the seventh season left off.
Actors Liev Schreiber, Jon Voight, and Kerris Dorsey will all return and Schreiber and series showrunner David Hollander will write the project’s script. Filming will begin later this year and Hollander will direct the Showtime movie. An air date hasn’t been set as yet.
While the cable channel hasn’t indicated that any other movies are planned, Showtime also hasn’t indicated that this project will wrap up the Ray Donovan story.

SHOWTIME(R) ANNOUNCES “RAY DONOVAN” FEATURE-LENGTH FILM
Emmy(R) and Golden Globe(R) Nominee Liev Schreiber To Return and Co-Write Script With Showrunner David Hollander, Who Will Direct
Golden Globe Winner Jon Voight and Kerris Dorsey Also Return
LOS ANGELES – February 24, 2021 – SHOWTIME has announced a RAY DONOVAN feature-length film continuing Ray’s journey, following the hit drama series’ seven-season run on the network. Star Liev Schreiber will return in his Emmy(R) and Golden Globe(R) nominated role and co-write the script along with series showrunner David Hollander, who will also serve as director. Golden Globe winner Jon Voight will also reprise his role as Mickey Donovan, as will Kerris Dorsey as Ray’s daughter Bridget. The production is tentatively scheduled to begin filming later this year in New York and will air on SHOWTIME. The announcement was made today by Gary Levine and Jana Winograde, Presidents of Entertainment, Showtime Networks Inc.
The new film picks up where season seven left off, with Mickey in the wind and Ray determined to find and stop him before he can cause any more carnage. It will also weave together the present-day fallout from the Donovan/Sullivan feud with Ray and Mickey’s origin story from 30 years ago.
“When RAY DONOVAN went off our air after seven great seasons, we heard from so many of its loyal fans that they were not ready to say goodbye to Ray and the wonderfully dysfunctional Donovan clan,” said Levine. “And so, for them, we are delighted that Liev and David are creating a thrilling new chapter of this iconic series.”
During its 82-episode run from 2013 to 2020, the series earned multiple Emmy, Golden Globe, Writers Guild and Critics’ Choice nominations, with Voight winning a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance By An Actor Role In A Supporting Role In A Series, Mini-Series, Or Motion Picture Made For Television.
The RAY DONOVAN film is executive produced by David Hollander, Liev Schreiber, Mark Gordon, Bryan Zuriff and Lou Fusaro.

What do you think? Have you enjoyed the Ray Donovan TV series? Are you looking forward to the upcoming TV movie?
Very happy to hear this is an awesome show
So very happy to get this news in my inbox this AM…. so glad for this movie…so many unanswered questions…. did Terry commit suicide? Does Daryl get a new start? etc..etc..
Y A Y ! ! ! ! !
Very glad to see Ray Donovan come back. It is truly one of the best TV shows that is truly worth following! Hope that it returns with more episodes and not just a movies ending the great series!!
Ray D is getting the Deadwood treatment, but thankfully much, much sooner — can’t wait to see ma Southies again, and I hope Showtime is open to doing more with the saga in this manner.
love Ray Donovan! Jon Voight as Mickey is such a great character, he makes the show, it should never have been cancelled, so much story to tell.
Ray Donovan should never have been canceled in the 1st place. With so many fans and so many negative comments about it being canceled should have kept it on. Why fix something that isn’t broken? You have a wonderful cast of such talented actors that wanted the series to continue and fans that didn’t want the show to end. It should continue with a series and not just a movie but I guess I’ll take what I can get.
I hadn’t realized the series had been cancelled since clearly the end of season 7 did not wrap up the story. I’m very glad they’ll at least not leave us completely hanging, but the show absolutely deserved a final 10-12 episode season to properly finish it. It’ll now be at least another year before the movie can be completed and that will cause many to fall out of interest in it because we will have forgotten where it left off and moved on to other current series. Another example of poor decisions by network executives killing a great show too… Read more »
Yes, I loved all the seasons of the show & wished it would have continued, great cast & show. I am looking forward to the new film, but I really don’t want it all to end! I am a very devoted fan!!!! Please reconsider continuing this show, it is amazing!
Thats great news!!! Can’t wait for new movie loved
Watching all 7 seasons.
Hooray!! The way it ended was just not right but it better be a really long movie to tie up all those loose ends 🙂
Phenomenal series, writing and acting. Deserves to write its own fitting conclusion on its terms and time, whether that is one or more movies. There is always a public demand for top shelf entertainment.
FINALLY!!! A resolution to the story of Ray Donovan
I am glad there will be closure, but the show should go on! A movie is a nice thought, but it still means no more Ray Donovan.
Wonderful News
