It’s one and done for Charlie Hunnam’s latest series. Apple TV+ has cancelled the Shantaram TV series after one season of 12 episodes. The de facto series finale was released today.
Based on the bestselling novel by Gregory David Roberts, the Shantaram TV series stars Hunnam, Shubham Saraf, Elektra Kilbey, Fayssal Bazzi, Luke Pasqualino, Antonia Desplat, Alyy Khan, Sujaya Dasgupta, Vincent Perez, David Field, Alexander Siddig, Gabrielle Scharnitzky, Elham Ehsas, Rachel Kamath, Matthew Joseph, and Shiv Palekar. The story follows an Australian fugitive named Lin Ford (Hunnam) who is looking to get lost in the vibrancy and chaos of Bombay in the 1980s. Alone in an unfamiliar city, Lin struggles to avoid the trouble he’s running from in this new place. After falling for an enigmatic and intriguing woman named Karla, Lin must choose between freedom or love and the complications that come with it.
The show’s expansive production proved challenging during the pandemic as filming was to take place across two continents. After two episodes were filmed, production had to be shut down in February 2020. Production didn’t resume until May 2021. Shantaram launched on October 14th with a trio of episodes and the remaining nine installments have been doled out one a week since then.
Hunnam has said that Shantaram was a sometimes grueling series to make, but that deep connection didn’t give him any insights into the show’s chances for survival. Here’s an excerpt from an EW interview that was given before the news of the cancellation was announced. The actor expresses frustration with how the fate of streaming series are decided.
What kinds of conversations have there been so far about a potential season 2 renewal?
I don’t know what conversations are going on about a second season. I don’t even know if there even are any conversations going on at this point about a second season. It’s a weird thing — streaming platforms work in a completely different way than traditional television networks, which is [by a] really very clear arithmetic: If a show is getting big numbers and can justify generating large ad revenue, then it’s pretty much a given that it’ll come back. I don’t quite know what the arithmetic within streaming platforms are to justify whether a show comes back. Nobody ever really knows what [the viewership] is because most of the streaming platforms are very reticent to publish exactly what the viewership is of shows.
So listen, your guess is as good as mine. My hope would be that they feel as though the show is good enough to justify another season. But honestly, I’ve got no f—ing idea. I am not privy to those conversations in any way, shape, or form.

What do you think? Have you kept up with the Shantaram series on Apple TV+? Are you disappointed that there won’t be a second season?
Very disappointed that Apple tv cancelled this series and left viewers without a conclusion. I have cancelled Apple tv
I loved the book and the first season of this show. Everything about it was true to the book and I wish I knew to whom to write to plead for a second season to complete the story.
We love this book and the series is AMAZING. Please bring it back! Can’t we ever have intelligent tv?
I’m so unhappy that they canceled this series. I loved the book so much I have read it several times, and although the show wasn’t quite as good (which is normal), it did a very good job condensing the story. I would have loved to see it continue in Season 2.
What is the name of the book? Is it available in India?
This was a great book and the series has been EXCELLENT in all aspects: script, acting, filming, etc. There should definitely be a Season 2. Word of mouth is spreading and many people are watching it now as the publicity was so low key at the beginning.
Loved every episode but got a late start because of poor publicity. If more people were aware of this show there would definitely be a season 2.
It’s such an amazing series! Show must go on!

Great show, very sad to say goodbye to all
Soo disappointing that we won’t see a second season!! Season 1 was gripping and gritty, a classy representation of the early chapters of the eponimous book, and Hunnam, Desplat, Saraf, and Kibey were outstanding and so perfectly cast in their roles. The ending of the final episode leaves the audience in the kind of unsatisfactory suspense that would only make sense if a second season were to follow. Everyone I know who watched Shantaram loved it; a few subscribed to apple tv+ just so they could watch Shantaram. How could apple simply scrap something so good, so special!
I really enjoyed season one and was looking forward to the next season. It’s disappointing as I subscribed to Apple TV to watch this movie
Me too!
So disappointed there won’t be another season!!!
I liked it, it was different and much better than the bore that it Criminal Minds Evolution.
I know many of the actors on the show not just Charlie and I presumed a second season would be announced.
There’s a lot of crap that gets renewed when trying to get through one episode was enough.
NCIS and Grey’s Anatomy are boring these day’s; They’re just dragging on.
Apple TV are the losers because when Shantaram finishes, I will be finished with them!
Sucks that it left it to be continued
Never finished season 1 due to it be so boring.
The fact he wasn’t privy to them, when he is the only actor in it that anyone has likely ever heard of kinda tells you all you need to know.
