Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
I thought it was a great show. There are not many shows that I look forward to watch. The worst part was there was no conclusion. Just found out it ended after checking web sites. You should try to bring it back. A big loss!
It just started getting good. Slow start, not totally factual, but was entertaining. I feel they should give it more time as only one season. Far better than Still the King. That show is rediculos to me.
I loved the show and I’m very disappointed it cancelled. I watched faithfully and was looking forward to season 2.
I really enjoyed the show and I am terribly disappointed that it is cancelled. I watched it faithfully and was looking forward to season 2.
I really enjoyed the appraoch this show took to telling a well known story. I thought it was very goo9d and I am disappointed it is cancelled. A shame.
VERY disappointed! Was really looking forward to season two. PLEASE change your minds cmt.
I won’t be watching CMT ever again – I actually looked forward to Thursday nights to watch Sun Records. How can you just end a show without even advertising that it was the SERIES finale?? It wasn’t even an ending. I had no idea that it was even over for the season let alone forever. Horrible mistake CMT. Hopefully a smart network like Netflix will take it over and continue it.
I really liked the show. I was hoping to see more in season two. first time I watched a series on cmt… may be my last.
This was a great show. Enjoyed seeing how my favorite singers got their start and their struggles. (Even if not spot on) My 19yr old enjoyed the show, it was something we could do together. This was very interesting and strongly feel you should give it another season. Surely you had more to tell about their stories. So disappointed!!
I hate you CMT – Sun records was really solid and unique – how does it not deserve a Season 2?
i really liked the series. am sad it wont be back. just left your watchers hanging…. not nice cmt.
Who at CMT got all liquored up and decided that there would not be a Season 2?
I’m done with CMT!
The acting was great, but the show as a whole was NOT historically accurate. I think a season two of it would have been terrible for true music history.
Nuts. Finally found a reason to watch CMT and they trash it. We thought it was very well done. We are at the old end of the demographic and lived the era. Oh well, back to the History Channel and Antiques Roadshow for us! Big mistake CMT.
This is BULL ****! this was one of 3 shows I actually cared about on television. The Knick was another… hearing both are now cancelled really makes you scratch your head wondering who is making decisions at these networks?? Sun Records was a must watch for music historians and lovers of real music. It was a breath of fresh air in a world of crap programming and I truly hope they reconsider their moronic decision.
