Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
You just had it on the wrong night and you didn’t promote it well at all. I thought the show was fantastic…..I got others to watch, but like I said….they never even heard of it. YOU HAVE A WINNER HERE……DONT THROW IT AWAY
I am very disappointed that Sun Records has been canceled. It was a great TV show. I hope CMT changes their mind.
This was our favorite show. Nashville seemed to run its course and then changed into something that no longer resembled the original show (especially with Rayna leaving), we were looking for something that would fill that void. When we found Sun Records, it was everything we could have wanted.
We are very disappointed that it will not continue & would really love for it to come back. It seems like whenever we really like a show, it is cancelled.
life is a gamble from the moment you wake up and put your foot on the floor. Why in the world would you cancel something that was about to take off. This is like Apple stock in 1999. Only the smart ones invested. So it’s time to put your big boy pants on and take a gamble. Let’s renew this for season 2. If the walking dead can become the number one show on cable on a wired cable channel then why couldn’t this show. You had the makings of a truly great show with great acting. Millions of people… Read more »
Another example of how snail minded suits can’t see past their tiny attention spans. This show had a chance to really build into something… But like so many too soon to die TV shows (Freaks and Geeks, Sportsnight, etc) Sun Records will be remembered as just another failed effort. Not because the show wasn’t good, but because the suits failed to understand its potential
They should NOT cancel the show it was one show that my children watch because the learned the music of the past. The music and shows these days Suck and CMT is puts these terrible shows on that have nothing to do with music.
Do not cancel this show. It’s a great show to show how all of the good stars got started. Amazing show!!!
It was one the few shows that I looked forward to watching every week and to cancel it just as Johnny Cash was about to start recording at Sun Records is very disappointing. Please bring it back!!!
Sun Records was one of the few TV shows I had any interest in…I actually looked forward to Thurday nights just to watch. When it was advertised, I had to search internet to find the network & time & almost missed the first episode. Had the show been on long enough, advertised more, it would have had higher ratings. Please bring back Sun Records..only show worth watching, loved it.
PLEASE CONTINUE SUN RECORDS!!!
Yes it may have started off slow, but the show was so great! I have had so many series that I have watched been canceled so please bring back this one!
