Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
Sun records should not be cancelled. Myself and many people i know love the series. We are very avid elvis fans and are extremely interested in his story.
We enjoyed this series why take off something that had history of music that alot of us grew up with? Hope this channel which we will never watch again losesratings
I was very disappointed when I found that Sun Records had been cancelled. I love it, my husband and I watched every episode from the beginning. Its not like all the other trash on TV or so called reality shows. I mean all this stuff really happened its entertaining and its historical. The entire cast is wonderful. I never watched cmt before this show and I don’t think i will anymore since they cancelled this show.
Real shame. Interesting show. Loved it.
To see where it all started. Doh!
Well guess I won’t be watching this channel anymore. To bad you don’t keep the good shows on. If it’s trashy or people are talking filthy or it’s not about sex then the shows don’t stay on. Shame on the networks. I will go back to reading and the food network. At least I can watch a tv show with my family on the food network. Wonder it tv will ever go back to shows that are worth watching.
Very disappointed if they cancel this great series!
This is very unfortunate, especially considering that the demographic which most enjoyed this series was 49+ not the 18-49 age group on which the cancellation decision was based. It would hope that the programming decisions would take the into account the demographic which witnessed the birth of rock and and the legends upon which this series is based. CMT you have just permanently lost another viewer!
Yes, sad that the viewership ratings of a younger age group were a determination factor in the series cancellation. That demographic mostly streams TV any way!
From what I saw, the show wasn’t very real to life. The way some of the events were shown were not the way they really happened. Although entertaining, if you’re going to do a show based on true events, then show how it really was and leave the Hollywood out of it.
It was just getting good.
Sun Records in Nashville are the only tv my wife and I watch together. Now you broke up a marriage.
This show should definitely be renewed, no question. My only disappointment was that Carl Perkins was not represented on the show as he was in Million Dollar Quartet.
I’m so sad. It was a classy show with great young talent, fantastic musik and superior acting. It put CMT on the map for me. Please revive it.
The story had just started. Bring it back and complete the story. So much more to tell. Please !!!
Me and husband love this show we love the music I never watch CMT any way and I won’t be watching any more it was one of the only good shows to watch these days. It was so good all the actor’s did a great job sorry CMT your the **** and not in a good way.
Sun Records was the ONLY reason I tuned in to CMT. I can’t believe you’ve scrapped the show! I think you’ve made a really bad decision!
