Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
Loved this show!!! It was great!! So disappointed. CMT should of let it catch on
Enjoyed the show, too bad
Too bad.
I loved this show can’t believe you are doing this!!! Why?
whoever idea this was is crazy! we loved this show and it was all based on real people and its hard to find good shows like that! Geez! Cmt thats crappy!
Loved the show. Was waiting for seson two. It should have never been cancelled.
Sun Records was a great show that told the personal stories of the some of America’s greatest innovators in rock n roll history.
I found it very entertaining to see behind the scenes from a recording engineer POV. Unlike seeing it only through the actual musicians. This was a good show that deserves a second season, why not??
Loved the series!!!!
I give up. It seems that every show I like has been cancelled this year. I really hope they reconsider.
I never watched CMT until that show came on, I watched every episode and was looking forward to more. It would be nice if there was at least one more short season to get into the beginning of Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash when they started out their careers so it could end in a more fitting way before it is canceled. I guess I will go back to forgetting the CMT channel exists. And ps, do they count it as a rating when you record the show with your DVR?
I started watching late in the season. I got hooked and now when I looked to find out when the new season was starting see it’s not been renewed! I’m very sad about this desicion!
Sorry to hear there won’t be a season two. Loved this series! Really wish CMT would reconsider. Watched all the episodes! Loved every one of them!
Really disappointed me and the hubby really liked the show wanted to see what happened next aint no good shows anymore
Why don’t executives count the 50+ age group when looking at the ratings.
You can’t expect the millennials to look at ancient history. We baby boomers are active and buy stuff including luxury items. We loved Sun Records and hope the execs change their minds and order Season Two! It was just starting to get into meaty topics. Please reconsider!
RENEW!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!
Loved the show!!
