Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
Wow, this was one of our favorites. Can’t believe no one watched. It was just getting good too, story line wise. Never in a million years did I think it would be cancelled.
I loved the Sun Record show!! I am so disappointed that CMT has chosen to cancel it. It was informative and entertaining. BRING IT BACK CMT!!
Loved this show! The problem is not many people know there are shows on CMT.
Great show wish it wasn’t canceled
This series is as accurate as any of the history of rock ‘n’ roll. Since I lived through this era, I believe that canceling such a dramatic series is not in the best interests of the public. Most people today do not know the real history of rock ‘n’ roll and who were the stars of that period of time. Those people invented rock ‘n’ roll.
I’m disappointed that the series Sun Records is not coming back. My husband and I couldn’t wait to see it each week. CMT didn’t promote the show enough. We happened to see a commercial about it or we wouldn’t have known. They should have gone on all of the talk shows and played clips of the show. This is a really good series. They also could have released it on DVD after a few seasons.
Maybe another network could take it over.
Great show. Too much important music history to deny your music loving audience. Bring it back as a Series, if for no other reason, as a documentary of the beginning and growth of recorded “popular” (rock-n-roll / country) music in America and the artists that made a demand for it. How many Americans think that there’s been only CDs and mp3s ???
Please bring back sun records
I’m even more disappointed in CMT now. This was the first show I have actually enjoyed on CMT in years. Sometimes, I might catch a countdown or awards but frankly, GAC does a better job focusing more on music and wholesome entertainment. CMT just proved again they are more concerned with ratings, by airing too much smut and trashy “reality tv”. Guess, I’ll keep watching GAC….Wonder if I could get a discount on my satellite tv if I just cancelled this channel???
I’m really disappointed that the show is cancelled. I watched it because I wanted to learn how the famous rock n roll stars got their fame, especially Elvis
Season 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 please
Please find another channel to run this!! Great show we really enjoyed!!
what a bunch of stupid ass holes cancel this show. shame on you.
Really disappointed that they cancelled this. Well done. I almost thought that somebody at CMT cared about their roots.
So did I
So disappointed in CMT
How sad that there is FINALLY a show on T. V. that has clean scenes and language, where I don’t have to cover my grand babies eyes or ears every time it’s on, and they cancel it???
The 18-49 demographics the Nielson ratings uses is a bit ridiculous, seeing as, that age group is only interested in reality shows and nudity. What ever happened to the views of the “over 50” category? I guess the backbone of America doesn’t matter anymore.
So disappointed in CMT.
