Cancel your season two plans, fans. There will be no second season of the Sun Records TV show on CMT. The story is ending with one season and has already been removed from the press site. The series is set in Memphis, Tennessee, during the early days of the Civil Rights movement and the birth of rock ‘n’ roll.
A music business drama, Sun Records stars Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, and Jonah Lees. The CMT cast also includes: Trevor Donovan, Keir O’Donnell, Jennifer Holland, Margaret Anne Florence, and Kerry D. Holliday.
Deadline reports:
While Nashville — which is half-way though its first season on CMT and fifth overall — has been renewed for a 16-episode sixth season, there are no plans to extend its companion, 8-episode period drama Sun Records, which chronicles the birth of rock ‘n’ roll, CMT’s head of development Jayson Dinsmore told Deadline.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night events, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” Dinsmore said of Sun Records, which got a boost by airing behind Nashville. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
Sun Records: A Look at the Ratings
The first season of Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 585,000 viewers. While those ratings seem low in comparison to broadcast network TV series, they fall between the other CMT TV shows we are tracking (i.e. Nashville and Still the King).
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Sun Records TV series? Do you think CMT should have cancelled or renewed it for season two?
I think CMT is making a big mistake canceling Sun Records. It was so interesting learning about the
early days of Sun Records and Rock and Roll. The actors were spot on in their portrayals of these
music legends. Another good show down the drain. Shame!
I guess it is more profitable to keep replaying Home Alone on CMT during the summer. Sun Records was more popular than Nashville so it had to be killed off.
I loved this show so much! Early rock and roll, gorgeous young Elvis, what could be better! Am heartbroken to see it end so soon.
Seeing the cancellation notice was really disappointing. Hubby and I loved this show and were looking forward to watching the evolution of the story. And the young men playing those iconic figures were so spot on in looks/moves/vocals, we felt sure reincarnation is a thing!
DON”T Cancel! We loved this show, too. The music and the history.
The show was great…my wife and I will be very disappointed if it doesn’t return.
I loved the show, the history and the music!
Please bring Sun Records back!
I can’t believe CMT cancelled Sun Records. I’ve been waiting for season two to start so I looked up the start date only to find out it had been cancelled. What a disappointment, maybe Netflix will pick it up.
Can’t believe they cancelled. It is a great show. Bring it back and do more advertising. This was such a good idea to focus on the early lives. Please bring it back.
I think it should be renewed, you’re using a demographic of a tween 18 to 49 and now then we’re going to remember that era
My wife and I watched every episode. It should be brought back. We loved it
Sun Records should be renewed!!! It told a story and history about these iconic legends. I even went while on vacation to visit Sun records because of the show. You needed to let more people know about it and give it a longer chance to succeed.
Why did the show Sun Records cancel? If it was not for the real people of the show CMT would not even be CMT. The show makes what CMT stand for! So bring it back.
If it was not for Elvis there would be no Rock n roll, if it was not for Johnny Cash there would be no Country. If Sun Records would not been there great music wouldn’t exist exist. Elvis and Johnny music will live forever. Bring Sun Records back.
Sun records should be renewed!!!! A lot of people didn’t even know it was on you should of advertised on Elvis radio!!!!! It was the best show on your channel!!!
