Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird. It’s a plane: It’s Reluctant Man! Whether Smallville was cancelled or just ended is a matter of semantics. The series was certainly a success with its ten season run, but when asked about reprising his Smallville role on CBS‘s Supergirl TV series, Tom Welling told Buzzfeed’s Jarett Wieselman, “It would be odd.”
Welling’s Smallville co-star — Laura Vandervoot, who played Supergirl in Smallville‘s latter years — has been cast on Supergirl, which stars Melissa Benoist in the title role. Vandervoot is reportedly playing Indigo, a living computer on the CBS freshman superhero show.
This week, Buzzfeed published Wieselman’s piece, “How ‘Smallville’ Changed Tom Welling Forever.” Wieselman tweeted Welling’s discussion of bringing his Smallville character to Supergirl, because the remarks did not make the the final piece.
Per the tweet, Welling said, “There’s people who would like it… there’s people who don’t like it, but I will tell you that no one has ever actually asked me to do it. So, I don’t know. It would be kind of odd. I don’t know who he is at that point. He would obviously be Superman.”

In the published interview, Welling talks about his new project, Section 13, that he’s developing at CBS. If the Tiffany Network greenlights the spy drama, Welling will star, as well as executive produce with Carla Kettner, who is attached as writer.
In the Smallville portion of the interview that did make it to publication, talked turned to the plethora of superhero shows now on TV, which was not the case during Smalleville‘s day.
From Buzzfeed:
Smallville followed young Clark Kent as he went from anonymous farm boy to iconic Man of Steel, all while trying to maintain a sense of normalcy and find true love. When the series debuted in 2001, television was a substantially less “super” place than it is now with Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Heroes Reborn, Gotham, Jessica Jones, and Daredevil currently dominating the landscape.
“It’s a compliment,” Welling said, thinking about the extensive superhero offerings on TV now. “I’m very proud of shows like Arrow [and] The Flash. … They’re able to ground these characters so that the viewer can relate on a human level to people who used to be only in two dimensions.”
Were you a Smallville fan? Would it be “odd” for you to see Welling in the Superman role on the Supergirl TV show? If you could cast him in another guest role on the new CBS series, what would it be? Tell us.
I would love to see Tom Welling reprise his role as Superman. I think he was perfect for the role and NEEDS to come into the Supergirl Series.
Tom Welling didn’t just act as the Kriptonian Kal El… He IS the Kryptonian Kal El aka Superman and deserves the role as superman in Supergirl, He is the best Superman actor!
NIK – Smallville worked most of the time, even into its tenth and final year, but after its 5th season, the series outgrew what was not only its sole premise – Clark Kent’s adolescence and coming-of-age – but the only reason Welling took the part in the first place. “No tights, no flights.” That was the show’s motto when it debuted almost 15 years ago and that’s what Welling signed-up for. It’s probably a motto that the producers were forced to adhere to, at least in the literal sense, just to keep their star from walking away. Otherwise, I don’t… Read more »
I am not sure where people thought Tom Welling was a huge star and that the ONLY reason he took the role on Smallville because he made them promise “no rights no flight”. That wasn’t Tom Welling who forced WB to put that clause it. It was the execs of Smallville who wanted to differentiate between that series and the Lois and Clark series on ABC from 1997.
Tom Welling, while I do like him has no star power like say Will Smith or Jennifer Lawrence
Small ills provided the way for these shows to have an audience. Ten years was too short and Tom should have been given them hands, and for us to be given the chance to see his character mature to the Superman that was meant to be. It would not be weird at all. Especially on the CW/WB where we only know Tom Welling as Clark Kent. To have anyone else would be weird.
I would love to see Welling finally get to do tights AND flights. Make it so!
Tom Welling is the only Superman. Right now I occasionally watch Supergirl because nothing els is on. If Tom Welling was back as Superman, I would watch constantly because I wouldn’t want to miss him. Only he can fill those shoes ..or cape !
I am a huge fan of superman and I think that he would be great for playing the TV superman because we are already used to the fact of him playing that role. Plus if he would be cast I think it would be cool and funny if he would play Lex Luthor somewhere in the series.
Tom welling is superman
Look it would be a very good idea to put Tom back on as Clark Kent and superman because the flash needs help and supergirl.
I agree Tom should show up in super girl and the flash he should operate out of his on fortress. They should have continued the show with the justice League instead we have to settle with what’s left.We want Tom back as superman.
I think he did a magnificent job in Smallville. He deserves (if he wants) bieng Superman in the Supergurl series.
It would be cool if he was Superman on the Supergirl tv show.
It would be cool for him to play Bizarro Superman or Clark Luthor or what the heck Clark Kent too. He has done them before. He would be reprising still.
Tom Welling would played on smalvilla was a great Actor on the show
Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and even to a center extent Agents of Shield and Agent Carter are only on the air because of the 10 year run by Smallville. While these other shows have somdewhat filled the void, I still miss Smallville.
