It turns out that The First won’t have a second season on Hulu. The TV show has been cancelled after one year of eight episodes. Deadline confirmed the cancellation.
A British-American Hulu drama, The First stars Sean Penn, Natascha McElhone, LisaGay Hamilton, Hannah Ware, Keiko Agena, Rey Lucas, James Ransone, Anna Jacoby-Heron, Melissa George, Brian Lee Franklin, and Oded Fehr. The story centers on an astronaut crew attempting to be the first humans on Mars, as well as the families they’ll leave behind.
Written by Beau Willimon and executive produced by Willimon and his producing partner Jordan Tappis, the show is owned and produced by Westward Productions (founded by Willimon and Tappis) and co-financed by Hulu, Channel 4, and IMG.
The First was given a direct-to-series order in May 2017 and the only season of eight episodes was released last September.
What do you think? Did you like The First TV show? Are you sorry that it’s been cancelled? Would you have watched season two?
Please produce a second season of First. THE show inspired hope and challenges us to believe in the the unbelievable. We need a show like First.
What a huge disappointment! I LOVED this show! I was so looking forward to season two. With all the crap to choose from that has been renewed this was a big let down.
Netflix! Amazon! Save this show please!

My wife and I were absolutely blown away by the legitimate dramatic entertainment that the show provided. Truly one of the best pieces of television we’ve seen in many years. The acting, script and tone is as good as anything we’ve seen since The West Wing.We are horrified that it’s been canceled after only one season and can only hope at some other network or Hulu will reconsider and order a second season.
Please do.
What a great show!
I really loved watching The First! It was a beautiful, step by step adventure toward humans accomplishing their goal of landing on Mars and returning to Earth. I have cared about the characters’ personal and professional lives. I began to believe in the dreams of these courageous people. It is an awful let-down to find the show is now cancelled. I really want to know if the entire mission is a success. I want to experience the Commander’s daughter finding a life after so much emotional pain. I want to be in the midst of the excitement when the Mars… Read more »
Wonderful show and acting. It was like real life in our near future.
Love the show
I loved it – beautifully written, filmed, and acted. A refreshingly optimistic worldview able to accommodate heartbreakingly realistic family drama. What I wouldn’t give to have a few more episodes to wrap up loose ends. What was with the telephone guy? How did Laz hurt her back? How will Denise fare with Tom away? What will the astronauts learn on Mars and will they be able to
get back?
This always happens with a new series. Never giving it a chance to find an audience. At least give it two seasons so it can end correctly!
Wow! I’m actually surprised it didn’t get renewed. I liked the slow pace of each episode since all of the acting was INCREDIBLE and it had a great STORY. A very good Drama that hopefully will get picked up by another network soon!
I loved this show. Please do not cancel it!
My husband and I loved the series and are sorely disappointed to see it cancelled. it was so much more than a “space” show. excellent characters and acting and wonderful plot lines. it is hard to believe Hulu would cancel it. I have recommended it to everyone. Hope it finds another home. I will be eatching,
Absolutely!!! Please give us season two! I feel emotionally attached!!
The First was EXCELLENT from start to finish. Even the trailer gave me an idea: it’s a drama first and foremost. I knew it would not be some big space thing because that was obvious. Too bad so many idiots expected that, or let’s say too bad the creators didn’t make that more obvious to everyone.
I know it was a drama, but pace was too slow in several parts. If someone picks it up, they should completely change it, maybe season 2 could be a horror/syfy, season 3 action, season 4 comedy, etc… just something different (otherwise, I doubt there would be many viewers of another slow drama).
I tend to agree that it was probably too slow and deep for those people that don’t have an attention span.
It was very good though for the right kind of viewer.
Wow!! That is a remarkably dreadful idea.
HORROR SYFY? No way! We have way too much of that junk going around! This was a great drama, with great acting, phenomenal “realistic fiction” that could one day really take place. To each his own though I just wouldn’t want them to ruin it with horror. 🙂 What a mistake to leave the viewers hanging without closure.
