It turns out that The First won’t have a second season on Hulu. The TV show has been cancelled after one year of eight episodes. Deadline confirmed the cancellation.
A British-American Hulu drama, The First stars Sean Penn, Natascha McElhone, LisaGay Hamilton, Hannah Ware, Keiko Agena, Rey Lucas, James Ransone, Anna Jacoby-Heron, Melissa George, Brian Lee Franklin, and Oded Fehr. The story centers on an astronaut crew attempting to be the first humans on Mars, as well as the families they’ll leave behind.
Written by Beau Willimon and executive produced by Willimon and his producing partner Jordan Tappis, the show is owned and produced by Westward Productions (founded by Willimon and Tappis) and co-financed by Hulu, Channel 4, and IMG.
The First was given a direct-to-series order in May 2017 and the only season of eight episodes was released last September.

I enjoyed the show. I would have watched a second season.hope they change their minds.
It was the Rectify of the space genre, though it was just anticipating space in the first and only season. I thought this show had all the ingredients of brilliance: writing, acting, vision, sound. All about relationships to the planet, to work, to family and to ourselves. I am very sorry it was cancelled. I am hoping for a miracle.
Thought-full, thought provoking, sound and cinematography excellent, great storyline and acting —- to bad that’s not enough.
Please give us what we all want…. Season 2, 3, & 4!

I was so ready for Season 2. I would have definitely watched it now that they would be traveling to Marz.
Could have been great….they focused on wayyyyy to much drama and not enough cool shots of space and Mars at least to tease. Also better known names than Sean Penn might have helped. It’s a shame because these near future somewhat realistic shows and movies never come around. Could have had great potential. Guess I’ll settle for Mars on tv/Netflix
Great show iam sad there will be no second series
I enjoyed The First and looked forward to the next episode. Sean Penn and the rest of the cast were really getting into their characters more and more each week. The show has much potential if allowed to develop through a season 2.
Season 2 please, loved it.
I loved ‘the First’. Feel like crying to know that there will be no season 2. This is cheating? They should tell on season 1 episode 1 that there is no season 2. Time is precious. Spent time on 8 episodes to know that there is nothing after that? Don’t the producers respect others’ time? Take offline season 1 if there is going to be no season 2.
I am just one week into a one month free trial of Hulu, and found “The First” while browsing around last weekend through the content. Burned through the series in 3 days. This was absolutely top notch television and would have guaranteed that I would stay subscribed to Hulu if it had been continued. I did not know anything about this series and expected a typical sci-fi adventure series, which of course it is not. One of the few intelligent tv shows. I was on the set of another show shooting in front of a live audience and was amazed to discover that every retake was to dumb the show down until the audience got it. I used to think Hollywood was dumb until I learned that it is the mass audience they are forced to market to that is dumb. Obviously I and others who enjoyed The First are not a large enough market….
