(New York, NY – April 19, 2017) Today, at the National Geographic Partner’s Further Front presentation, the network released first-look photos of the cast from the production of the global scripted event series The Long Road Home, based on Martha Raddatz’s New York Times best-seller. Production began in March in Fort Hood, Texas, and relives a heroic fight for survival during the Iraq War when the 1st Cavalry Division from Fort Hood, Texas, was ferociously ambushed on April 4, 2004, in Sadr City, Baghdad – a day that became known in military annals as “Black Sunday.” The series will air later this year on National Geographic in 171 countries and 45 languages.
Two-time Emmy-nominated actor Michael Kelly (“House of Cards,” “Taboo“) portrays Lt. Col. Gary Volesky, the battalion commander who leads a daring rescue operation when the 1st Cavalry Division comes under attack by Iraqi insurgents. Emmy-nominated actor Jason Ritter (“Parenthood,” “Girls“) appears as Capt. Troy Denomy, who leads the rescue convoys into the city following the dramatic ambush of a 1st Cavalry Division platoon and is a devoted family man with a wife and newborn son.
E.J. Bonilla (“Unforgettable“) plays Lt. Shane Aguero, leader of the ambushed men. Kate Bosworth (“Blue Crush,” “SS-GB,” “The Art of More“) takes the role of Capt. Denomy’s wife, Gina. Sarah Wayne Callies (“Prison Break,” “The Walking Dead,” “Colony“) will appear as LeAnn Volesky, wife of Lt. Col. Volesky and a leader in the family readiness community.
Noel Fisher (“Shameless“) portrays Pfc. Tomas Young, the heroic 24-year-old soldier and later peace activist who is severely wounded in this battle. And Jeremy Sisto (“Suburgatory,” “Law & Order,” “Six Feet Under“) plays Staff Sgt. Robert Miltenberger, a career soldier on the cusp of retirement who has been stop-lossed for this deployment.
The Long Road Home is based on the New York Times best-selling book of the same name by Martha Raddatz and has been adapted by screenwriter Mikko Alanne. The series will be executive produced by Mike Medavoy, Jason Clark, Mikko Alanne, Benjamin Anderson and Edward McGurn. For National Geographic, Carolyn G. Bernstein is executive vice president and head of global scripted development and production.

I was there, the 1st Sergeant of C 1-82 FA that day still is very vivid in my memory. It was the best of people/soldiers at the worst of time. A division came together to support a company in the rescue of their own. I would not want to relive that experience again, or wish it on anyone else. I also am so proud of the people who were there and the bravery that was demonstrated that I, at times, can’t contain the emotion of pride and sorrow for for those who were there. My Son Lt Christopher Dean led the “QRF” Platoon and was wounded in the rescue of the trapped 1st Cav Plt. The previous rescue attempts failed. I ‘m curious on how the the final rescue is portrayed. I’ll be surprised if it is mentioned at all.
