The chances of a sixth season renewal have disappeared for The Magicians. Syfy has revealed that the current fifth season will also be the show’s last.
The Magicians stars Stella Maeve, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Hale Appleman, Arjun Gupta, Summer Bishil, Rick Worthy, Jade Tailor, Brittany Curran, and Trevor Einhorn. The series follows a group of friends as they discover their magical abilities and ward off evil creatures who threaten to destroy the magical world they’ve come to know. In season four, magic was saved with Quentin Coldwater giving his life to save his friends and the world. In year five, there’s too much magic and, as the excess builds, an apocalypse looms.
The fifth season of The Magicians averages a 0.11 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 341,000 viewers. Compared to season four, that’s down by 44% in the demo and down by 37% in viewership.
Eight episodes of the current season’s 13 installments have aired thus far. The de facto series finale is expected to run on Wednesday, April 1st. While the season’s finale was not planned to end the show, word is that it was written so that it could also serve as The Magicians’ last episode.
“The Magicians has been a part of our Syfy family for five fantastic seasons,” Syfy said in a statement to Deadline. “As we near the end of this journey, we want to thank John McNamara, Sera Gamble, Henry Alonso Myers, Lev Grossman, and our entire brilliant cast, crew, writers, and directors for their beautiful creation. But most of all, we thank the fans for their tremendous support and passion. Because of you, magic will be in our hearts forever.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of The Magicians TV show? Are you sorry to hear that there won’t be a sixth season of this Syfy series?
As usual, The SyFy Channel cancels an excellent show. I have been watching The Magicians since the first episode. The show did take a dive when Quinton was taken off. Finding a way to bring Quinton back would have helped the show. However I still enjoy the show. SyFy took off Warehouse 13 and Eureka in the same fashion. I just wish the SyFY network would ask for viewer’s opinions sometimes. The ratings do not show the true picture of who and how many people are showing SyFy programming. I’m disappointed, but with the SyFy Channel it isn’t a surprise.
I like this show and I watch it with my minnennal daughter. The writers of this show have such great imaginations that surpass anything ever seen on TV or movies. It’s a total shame it’s being canceled.
Yes killing Quinton was stupid! I think the show should/must go on. I’m so tired of starting a new series get hooked and love it to only have it canceled. Maybe y’all should wait and see how season 6 fares then decide if it should be canceled. Seriously.
Respectfully,
Kathy B.
I think the big reason it canceled was the season 4 finale was bad. Tons of fells and it would have awesome if it was hour longer. So much seemed to happen off screen, I felt I missed half the episode.
Wow I just started this show a week ago figuring everyone says it’s good and I figured I’d binge up to the current episode and be safe to get into a show without fear of it being cancelled. I mean this is the only show I know of on scifi these days and I thought no way that it was in danger of being cancelled…guess I was fooled again
I’ve watched from the start and this is one of the best shows. I watch at least 2 or 3 episodes every day and never get bored. I hope it will be picked up by someone that can promote this great show better than it has been. It feels like there are still so many stories yet to be told.
What can I say..once again the viewer is robbed of another great show. A wonderful ensemble of new young actors, great writing and production married to a subject that many people enjoy. All I can do along with my fellow commentators is hope Amazon or someone else picks up the show. Look what happened to Longmire, cancelled after two seasons and picked up by Netflix and ran for another 4 seasons…with fab support.
I really hate for this series to end. Everyone needs something so different to watch to temporarily escape daily lives if only for an hour once a week. This year we are losing so many. Series anyway.
I am so upset! This is my favorite show I’m utterly heartbroken I really hope that another platform picks it up because (this is going to sound pathetic af) The Magicians is literally my life, I have all 3 books and bought all 5 seasons on amazon.
If I had the money I would fund it myself.
Please SyFy don’t do this to meeeeee!
Am pissed. The same thing happen with Shadowhunters am done with syfy… like wtf that’s stupid. Everything that we love are going off…
I agree with Sharon, Aaron, and Roxie. This is one of the best shows on TV. It had the real potential to take off after Quentin’s death and really develop the other characters. We could only wish that I would get picked up by Netflix.
Why do they cancel all the good shows! This one is near and dear to us!!! We absolutely LOVE IT!!!!
I’m disappointed both in season 5 and the cancellation. The arc and take away from Q’s death should have been that the group works better when they work together. Instead everyone grieves alone and has their own agendas. Repeated actions reap the same results. Our intrepid heroes were never allowed learning curves (except Margaux and hers was a U-turn).That is lazy and boring writing. They should have done better for the cast.
Dang I just got into the show last year and it quickly became one of my favorites. Not having Quentin in the show as a character similar to penny was a mistake I think. Would be more interesting but now it’s only about penny 13 and one less storyline. I still think it’s a great show and wish it could continue because I felt this season would be a slump and then it could hopefully have built for a 6th season. Shows never do well when the main character exits.
I’d like to see Magician’s picked up by Netflixs. I love love love magicians and think it is AWESOME! It is one of my favorite shows. I love the ranges of information that stretches the way we think. I love magic. I hope the show is picked up.
I agree with you completely I feel the same way, I really hope Netflix picks it up too. Idk what I’m going to do without looking forward to new episodes of The Magicians!
I’m not surprised. I thought it ran its course 3 seasons ago
3 seasons ago? Season 3 and 4 were the best of the first four seasons lol… basically saying it ran its course after season 1?
