The Trickster TV show will have a shorter than expected lifespan. The drama series, which originates on CBC in Canada, is currently airing its first season on The CW. Trickster had already been renewed for a second season in Canada but now, those plans have been cancelled.
The Trickster TV show is based on the bestselling trilogy of novels by Eden Robinson. The series stars Joel Oulette, Crystle Lightning, Craig Lauzon, Kalani Queypo, Anna Lambe, Nathan Alexis, Joel Thomas Hynes, Gail Maurice, and Georgina Lightning. Set in Kitimat, British Columbia, the story follows Jared (Oulette), an Indigenous teen who struggles to keep his dysfunctional family above water. Jared holds down an after-school job and cooks ecstasy on the side to support his separated parents. But, when Jared starts seeing strange things, his already chaotic life is turned upside down. At first, Jared thinks he’s losing his mind but, to his relief and terror, the supernatural events surrounding him are all too real.
On The CW, the first season of Trickster is averaging a 0.08 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 410,000 viewers. Three of the six episodes have aired.
The cancellation of the second season by CBC comes a month after Trickster co-creator and director Michelle Latimer resigned from the series due to a controversy over her claimed Indigenous ancestry. Latimer publicly apologized for naming the Kitigan Zibi community in western Quebec as part of her family history before “doing the work to formally verify this linkage.”
Two producers of the series announced their resignations soon after the questions were raised. Consulting producer Danis Goulet quit and co-creator, co-showrunner, and executive producer Tony Elliot said he withdrew from his role as co-showrunner but would stay on as an executive producer.
On Facebook, Latimer wrote, “It’s with a heavy heart that I am resigning from Season 2 of Trickster. When I first read the novels that inspired Trickster, I was struck by the powerful tale of a family coming together to overcome adversity. I envisioned this story as a television series that would celebrate Indigenous talent and amplify Indigenous voices. I have listened to my community and feel that stepping away from the production is the appropriate course of action.” Latimer also wrote, “I stand by who I am and by my family’s history, but I also understand what is being asked of me. I recognize my responsibility to be accountable to the community and my fellow artists, and that is why I have made this decision.”
Now, CBC has decided to cancel the show and released the following statement:
Statement regarding Trickster
Jan 29, 2021
We have had many conversations over the last few weeks with a view to continuing production on a second season of Trickster. Those conversations included producers, writers, actors, and the author of the books on which Trickster is based.
Fully respecting everyone’s perspective, season two will not move forward as planned unfortunately.
CBC is extremely proud we were able to bring this compelling story to the screen and are grateful to the many talented individuals who made it possible.
We are as committed as ever to telling other important Indigenous stories, of which there are many. In fact, CBC currently has eight such scripted projects in development and we look forward to sharing more details about what’s next in the coming months.
Statement from author Eden Robinson:
“One of the best parts of 2020 was watching the young, Indigenous cast soar. The outpouring of support for the first season was magical. I’m deeply grateful that CBC and Sienna respect this situation. It gives me hope that future collaborations with Indigenous creatives can be done with care and integrity.”
Of the decision to cancel, Latimer said, “I was not involved in the decision that was announced today and am sad to hear that Season 2 has been cancelled. … I am incredibly proud of the entire team that worked so hard to bring Trickster to life, and I will forever be grateful to the cast and crew that poured their hearts and souls into its creation.”
The CW is expected to air the remaining three episodes of Trickster but that will be where the story ends, at least on television. Martin’s third novel in the Trickster book series, Return of the Trickster, is expected to be released in March.
What do you think? Have you been watching the Trickster TV show? Are you sorry to hear that there won’t be a second season on CBC or The CW?
Say Wot??? I found this show by accident and was HOOKED immediately! It was so different from anything on TV Loved the scenery! Loved INDIANS! Acting was great, effects were fascinating.. and the story so mystical…please give this a second chance. This was truly an original series. Perhaps you should have advertised it better to a larger audience. Really hate to see it disappear!
Best
Show on cw want more senons
One person’s issues shouldn’t spoil the making of a second season of Trickster. I have really enjoyed this show for its unique storyline, just as I have liked seeing CW air shows Devil and Coroner this year. Refreshing to mix it up with the Arrowverse offerings and Pandora and The Outpost. Somebody in CW’s leadership please take a chance on this project.
This show was so good. I plan on buying the books.
Really wish some station would pick it up for a second season or remake to include all books.
Always intrigued by Native American culture – to bad it ended – great acting & great actors.
…good idea, I will have to buy the books now also…was such a unique show…loved it.
I get that ratings is a big part of keeping anything alive. But so does marketing. I heard about the show by word of mouth. Thanks to Red Cloud. I honestly think with a good advertising team this show will be big.
It was originally picked up for a second season. The show’s producer Michelle Latimer had always indicated an indigenous heritage from stories by her grandfather. She never verified, and it was found not to be the case. She was fired from the show, other producers quit. For some reason, they decided to end the show no S2. I know really unbelievable. Guess US executives are not the only ones that make ridiculous decisions. I do not understand punishing the actors, the crew, the story and the audience. Such a fresh and interesting show. Hope some one will pick it up.

I called a friend to tell him to watch tonight’s finale, (but very sadly) I was on the phone and missed tonight’s Airing. What a fascinating TV show, perhaps they needed to advertise it more (nobody knew about it!)? db :))
Great storyline, fabulous acting – what’s up? Not mainstream enough for the advertisers? VERY sorry to see it go.
Producer thought she had some ties to an indigenous heritage. Turns out that she never verified what her grandparents thought to be true and this fact was made public. Controversy arose, she and two others left or were fired. The show had already been picked up for S2 but after this a decision was made to cancel and end the show. So sad. I too can not believe this show is over. Surely CW or someone pick up so they can finish Jared’s story.
Well this just sucks!!!
I’m not understanding why CW are bringing these cancelled shows to the line up only to get viewers hooked! It’s very frustrating and very unfair to loyal fans of regular tv who still watch without cable
I am completely upset. Get a new person to do season 2!!!!
Amazon or Netflix.. Please do 2nd season!
I so agree with Erik K!
I just started watching it. I am very sad. I love all the actors playing the parts. I also love the fact they are Native American. The storyline is wonderful. I too have some Native American blood. PLEASE BRING SOMETHING SIMILAR BACK WITH ALL THE ACTORS! I was hooked. Now, I’m sad and upset.
ME TOO! Waaahhh
How frustrating and disappointing. I was really enjoying this show. The characters interesting the story had me watching each week. Why cancel this show? Ridiculous.
Cancelling this series was a wrong decision. I don’t know what bureaucratic BS was involved, but it seems it’s typical of Canadian content being pushed aside. I was so excited to see something of this caliber brought to TV viewers, showcasing Indigenous culture/folklore/good writing/great actors…..so disappointing. I found it to be a good series…I seriously don’t get why they have cancelled it. I’m causation, I loved this show. Made me proud being a BC resident as they showcased our beautiful province. It’s big mistake I say.
I have been watching the show i liked it, I am sorry that it has to be canceled.
