Following one of NBC’s worst seasons, the peacock network is understandably making quite a few changes for the fall season. There are a number of interesting shows on the schedule which includes Aaron Sorkin’s Studio 60. Will the new shows and the addition of Sunday Night Football help return the National Broadcasting Company to its ratings glory days? Time will tell. Here’s what won’t be returning:
The Apprentice: Martha Stewart – This show didn’t quite gel and the result of having two versions of The Apprentice on the air at the same time, seemed to weaken both.
The Book of Daniel – This controversial Aiden Quinn show was cancelled before airing all of its initial six episodes. Click here for previous coverage.
Conviction – Though not technically a Law & Order spin-off, this series did feature Law & Order: SVU actress Stephanie March in her role as Chief Cabot. All thirteen episodes have aired and it won’t be returning with more. The series is available on DVD.
E-Ring – Expectations for this Jerry Bruckheimer political/military drama, that starred Benjamin Bratt and Dennis Hopper, were high but never established a large enough audience. Of the 20 episodes produced, only 14 were aired. It’s unclear if NBC will air these during the summer.
Fear Factor – After six seasons and 142 episodes, NBC is pulling the plug on the guilty-pleasure show that’s all about making contestants and viewers both scared and sick. Fans of the show can see it return in reruns on NBC in June.
Four Kings – The Seth Green comedy never caught on — despite a large promotional campaign (alongside the better-received My Name is Earl). Seven of the 10 episodes have been aired and there are no current plans to return it to the schedule.
Heist – It seems like someone stole this show’s ratings. NBC aired five of the six produced episodes of this action-adventure drama and it won’t be returning.
Inconceivable – One of the early fatalities of the 2005-06 season, this doctor drama was pulled back in October of 2005. Only four of the 10 produced episodes have aired.
Joey – A ratings disappointment for the network (which may have had unreasonably high expectations), the Friends spin-off aired only 14 of its 22 second season episodes. It seems unlikely that the rest will be aired during the summer. The first season is available here.
Surface – This sci-fi series about strange sea creatures seems to have been eclipsed by ABC’s Invasion (which has also been cancelled). All 15 first season episodes have aired and any plans for season two have been permanently deep-sixed. The first season is available here and you can also download Surface on iTunes.)
Teachers – This mid-season comedy about New Jersey teachers won’t be returning for a new semester, uh, season.
Three Wishes – SingerAmy Grant’s show about small-town wish-fulfillment didn’t achieve Extreme Makeover-sized ratings and won’t be returning for another season. It’s been off NBC since December of 2005 but CMT (Country Music Television) has reportedly acquired the rights to air the reruns.
The West Wing – This venerable White House drama had its series finale on May 14, 2006. You can read previous coverage here or a recap of the final episode.
Will & Grace – The groundbreaking and often bawdy sitcom aired its last episode on May 18, 2006. You can read coverage here or a recap of the final episode.
Crossing Jordan was planned to be a mid-season replacement but has been moved onto Friday night on the fall schedule. Scrubs has been renewed for 22 new episodes but won’t return until early 2007.
Conviction was a rare find. Even though it was joining other “cop” shows, it truly sucked you in and you were hooked before you knew it. You seriously should think about listening to the fans and bringing that show back. It was great writing and acting of some truly “fresh” faces. Huge, huge disappointment.
Conviction was a brilliant show. I am devastated that it was cancelled and hope that you will reconsider. The writing was superb and the acting was excellent. Conviction was addictive and you let it slip through your fingers. What a disappointment.
I agree that CONVICTION was a great show with loads of potential. By having young, good looking actors, it had a chance at drawing a younger audience into the television world of legal dramas. Many younger people don’t relate as well to the more mature cast of Law and Order, but this was a nice alternative. I found myself excited to see each episode and I am truly disappointed at NBC’s decision to pull the plug. I hope that they might reconsider and bring it back mid-season for another go and hopefully in a better time slot.
I just found out that NBC cancelled Conviction, what is wrong with you people? I am a huge Law & Order fan and have been for years and for the first time in a long time I got hooked on a new show that being Conviction! Please bring it back.
Surface was the the best show on tv last season.I would have liked to see how it ended. Another great show down the drain just like invasion.
George
I hate the fact that NBC cancelled Conviction before it even got the chance to blossom. I mean – 10pm on Friday? They didn’t even really give them a chance. They should have aired it earlier in the week, thendecided if it should be cancelled or not. And if so they could have at least ENDED it instead of leaving it hanging wide open. That really makes me mad. there are so many showws that i get into only for them to get cancelled mid-way. i say, at least finished it off. you owe the fans THAT much.
BRING BACK CONVICTION….NOW
invasion, surface , commander in chief and e-ring were 4 of the best shows of 2005-2006 I hope that they may be reconsidered for the new 2006-2007 season. Please do your best
Conviction touched on so many moral issues both legally and personally … unlike so many other shows that are a complete waste of time. Conviction IS such a great show. Please bring it back. You never really gave it a proper chance to begin with.
WTFO regarding Conviction? The best new show on TV. In the same league as ER and CSI. Great actors, phenomenal to the core story lines. I think this is a huge mistake. Of course it suffered on Friday night. It’s Friday night for Christ’s sake!! Who stays at home and watches TV. We’d TIVO it every week and watch over morning coffee the next day. Who’s the genius bhind this faux pas? The same guy who thinks Deal or No Deal will last probably-what a loser.
Conviction wasn’t given a fair shake. Those NBC boneheads should have hung onto it for one more season, and they should have put in a different time slot.
1. It takes time to build a following, and
2. Friday night is a death sentence
Conviction was a unique show that was just starting to build a following. That’s my two cents.
“COMMANDER AND CHIEF” WAS A TV SHOW I WOULD GO OUT OF MY WAY TO WATCH. I WILL BE SORRY TO SEE IT GO. ALL NBC HAS LEFT IS REALITY SHOWS AND LAW AND ORDER’S .
It’s a shame that a very patriot show like E-Ring gets cancelled. I feel that more shows of this nature needs to be aired to stiffen the backbones of the wimps in this nation. god bless this show.
Please try airing Conviction again…this was an excellent show and should be given a second chance on a different day in a different time slot. Excellent acting, excellent story lines, and an all around excellent show! This was the only show that I watched on NBC during primetime hours…Please bring it back NBC!!!
Oh my, I’m crushed!! I just found out they cancelled Conviction!! :o( You guys have to bring it back. I actually looked forward to this over any other t.v. show… I have the shows… bring it back…. PLEASE!! YOU CANCELLED THE WRONG SHOW!!!!
