Only three returning ABC TV shows were up in the ratings last season and many new series were cancelled. How will the alphabet network perform this time around? Stay tuned!
There’s lots of data that network execs looks at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but ratings are the major ingredient. These charts will be updated daily, as new ratings data becomes available.

A couple of notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released. The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same day viewing), unless marked with an asterisk (*). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually so feel free to let me know if I missed something.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are harder to reach.
Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking.
The networks take into account when shows air on Fridays and Saturdays, nights when TV viewership is lower.
What do you think? Are you surprised by any of the ratings? Which shows should be doing better? Which one do you think will be cancelled next?
Really bad idea to cancel Castle. You finally have a good show that I watch each week. It has drama, comedy and NO bad language and you make the crazy decision to cancel it. Won’t be watching ABC anymore! Can’t stand any of your new shows.
It was the decision of the actor playing Beckett. Her and Nathan didn’t get along. She wanted out of her contract
Please don’t cancel Nashville that is the best show I love ❤ Wednesday night from 8:00 pm till 11:00 pm all five of those shows are the create if you take off the Middle, the Goldberg’s, Modern Family, and Blackish. I dont think I will watch your network anymore. Please don’t take Nashville off. Say u made a mistake and rewrite the finale and bring it back for 2016-2017
I genuinely enjoyed Nashville even though I’m not much of a country music fan. I am extremely shocked & disappointed that it was cancelled yet the horrible, inane, idiotic Two Broke Girls remains. Your system is Broken. Most people record their shows to watch later. I’m 2 weeks behind right now! Your rating system doesn’t recognize that. Out-dated and archaic.
2 Broke Girls isn’t even on abc so that’s a pointless comparison.2 BG makes money in syndication and has better ratings than Nashville.Quality is subjective and has no nothing to do with renewals/cancellation.Dvr only matters is C3 and if you’re a Neilson viewer that dosent skip ads.
I would love to see the show come back another season.
It’s amazing how the ratings of these shows are based on ages 18 to 49. When TV is watched more by people OVER 49! These ABC polls are ridiculous & pregidous against the older population!!! They are cancelling one of the best scriped shows, Nashville! It’s ALWAYS been in the top 20. Also, just when The Family is getting deeper & more interesting, they cancel it! They are renewing shows that are lower in standings than Nashville!!! Nashville has a huge following. Except for Shondra’s Thursday night shows & Dancing with the Stars (to honor my mom, it was her… Read more »
18-49 watch less tv and less “live ” tv than 50& up and don’t watch as many commercials so they’re harder to reach and thus more valuable than over 50 who watch more tv ,more ” live” tv,more ads.
Doe’s ABC listen to viewers? Nashville and Blood and Oil are great…now they’re cancelled. No wonder cable TV is so popular. Every time a good show comes up it’s cancelled!
There is something called RATINGS! Perhaps you have heard of them? Look at the ratings for the 2 shows you mentioned. Are they over a 1.0? ABC already renewed 2 shows under a 1.0 They can’t renew FOUR! The ratings for the 2 shows you mentioned would be fine if they were in CABLE. but they aren’t. The viewers have spoken.
wish they would get rid of The Bachelor/Bachelorette, Shark Tank, Dancing w Stars, any “reality” show – have to laugh when they state “not scripted” they are so fake it is sickening specially the Bachelor.Bachelorette. Bring back Forever. I only watch Grey’s Anatomy, Once Upon a Time, Quantico, Scandal (starting to get annoying) and How to Get Away with Murder. As for the rest either never bothered, they were at the same time as two other shows I DVR. Any shows I like, they cancel after 2-3 shows before I even know they are on, , move them to different… Read more »
I am so angry that “The Family” is cancelled. I love that show. It had a great plot and great acting. To see some of the shows that are renewed is cazy!
I am so annoyed at ABC for cancelling the two shows that I like, Castle and
Nashville. I also watch Dancing with the Stars and that’s it. Three shows I
like and two get cancelled. No matter what you put on now, I will not be
watching because if I do you will surely cancel it. I watch very little TV
because most of it I don’t consider worth watching. I have lots of other
things that I do so I don’t need TV.
A lot of cancels for ABC
We like The Catch, Nashville, The Family, American Crime and watched Blood and Oil. I doubt these will be back.
The Muppets was entertaining and unusual..so of course, it was cancelled. Most everything on TV anymore is a bore to us and our friends. We only watch Frasier and Looney Tunes (the OLD ones) and a few movies.
Was Kings and Prophets too Biblical for people? Thought it very interesting and not given a chance with only two episodes. Something else is going on here.
I am officially done watching TV. It seems every show I start to like gets cancelled iwithout a chance to improve. So I am done canceling blood and oil was the last straw for me. I am done so long TV I am just going to start going to the movies. Seriously it is not worth my time and money spent on cable to watch anything anymore the network’s decide what they want the little people don’t matter to them. So goodbye networks!!!I an so over your bull.
Castle and Once Upon a Time!
I should have said I want these 2 to stay. Once Upon a Time is doing better as is Castle. Both were a little off track, but now things seem to be in a better place for both! <3
