Although BET runs a lot of non-scripted and acquired series, the cable network likes to keep a toe in the original scripted pool too. Enter the American Soul TV show. The 1970s historical series has a good beat, but can the first season make the Nielsen ratings dance? Will American Soul be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. *Status update below.
A BET original drama from creators Devon Gregory and Jonathan Price, American Soul stars Sinqua Walls, Kelly Price, Jason Dirden, Iantha Richardson, Katlyn Nichol, Jelani Winston, and Christopher Jefferson. The series blends fictional and real-life people, places and events, as it charts the rise of the cultural phenomenon of Soul Train. The story centers on creator and host Don Cornelius (Walls), and the Soul Train dancers, as they strive to make it in the racially charged Los Angeles of the ’70s.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.

*4/2/19 update: BET has renewed the American Soul TV show for a second season.
The ratings were probably low last year because no one knew it was on. I caught it by accident and LOVED it! Then I had to binge watch from the beginning. Season 2 is even better! There are so many story lines to fill the show and they are good. The writing for this show is superb and the period clothes and vehicles are on point. Cornelious was a complicated man with a dream who gave up everything for his dream. Hope there’s a Season 3.
To many commercials limited one or two pre break……. love to see more of the show pre episode
American Soul is Awesome!!! It needs a Season 2 and 3 and 4. !!
Season 2 is a must… did not catch show when originally aired binge watching on demand season 2 is a must
Feedback episode 1 and 2
I really liked it. However, because Soul Train was the most popular in the 70’s and 80’s I think maybe this generation may not fully understand all of the significance of the scenes and it’s back story. What was difficult for me was I am from that generation and am more familiar than maybe most, but I think there were too many story lines happening at one time and the characters of the other story lines I had no idea who they were and how they related to the show itself. I thought they were going to focus more on… Read more »
Agreed, American Soul has too much going on. As an older person familiar with Soul Train, I can make the connection with some of the characters. For instance, the 3 teens trying to form the singing group while dancing on Soul Train, I thin is suppose to be the group Shalamar. I think on American Soul, they go by Encore. The nightclub owner, Gerald Aimes, is loosely based on Dick Griffey. Dick Griffey formed Solar Records with Don Cornelius which signed later known acts like Shalamar, The Whispers, The Deele (which contained the hitmaking duo of LA Reid and Babyface).… Read more »
