TV show description:
This family sitcom revolves around an African-American family who are living the American dream — but that may be too much of a good thing for the family’s dad.
Andre ‘Dre’ Johnson (Anthony Anderson) considers himself the family patriarch. When he looks at his life, he sees a beautiful wife and four kids living happily in their colonial home in the suburbs. But when he looks a little closer, have the trappings of success brought too much assimilation for this black family? The world he sees has a much different lens than the one he would like his family to look through.
Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross) is an anesthesiologist and the bi-racial wife of Dre. He disagrees with some of her liberal viewpoints but they’re in agreement that they want to raise their kids in a better situation than what they had. Much to her husband’s wonderment, she believes their children can exist in a colorless society. She wants her husband to become the first black senior VP of his ad firm and she’s also looking forward to the salary increase that will follow.
At 15 years old, Zoey (Yara Shahidi) has everything going for her. She’s pretty, popular and super smart. However, she is dripping in privilege and unearned entitlement. Her idea of success is rooted in material things, rather than hard work.
Dre’s son is Andre Jr. (Marcus Scribner) but he asks to be called “Andy.” He also announces that, like his schoolmates, he wants a bar mitzvah for his 13th birthday. Trouble is, their family isn’t Jewish. When the boy says he wants to play for his school’s field hockey team instead of basketball, Dre wonders if he’d prefer Andre play basketball instead.
Diane (Marsai Martin) and Jack (Miles Brown) are the six-year-old twins. Jack is more of the sensitive type and idolizes his dad. Diane is gifted and talented and she thinks she has all the answers.
Dre’s father (Laurence Fishburne) is affectionately referred to as “Pops.” With an affinity for velour tracksuits and going to the racetrack, Pops can be a curmudgeon and takes every opportunity to offer his opinion on family issues.
Episode #176 — Homegoing
As Pops and Ruby prepare to move away, Dre and Bow consider if they should make a big life change as well. Grappling with this idea at work, Dre receives some unexpected advice from Simone Biles, who tells him to follow his heart. The Johnsons prepare for their goodbyes in the series finale.
First aired: April 19, 2022.
What do you think? Do you like the Black-ish TV show? Do you think it should have ended or been renewed for a ninth season?
This show has a few funny moments I’ve tried watching it several times since it comes on after other shows I’m watching. But will never tune in again after the last couple shows I’ve caught. The bashing of white people is ridiculous (can I make a show trashing all other races? NO WAY) but last weeks show on political views was so wrong!!! “We are black so no black people are republican etc etc etc… Telling their son he’s black so he must be a democrat! The show has reached of whole new level of stupidity and I’m so offended… Read more »
Great at times (GT’s) extremely offensive many more times (EOMT’s) THIS IS NO COSBY SHOW. Stopped watching due to the many more EOMT’s than GT’s, kind of ironic a extremely pro black racist view of other cultures is absolute acceptable to open liberal hispanics, whites and blacks.. It’s considered the norm. While, Black & White Christian values are trashed as racism and hate. I guess the Sitcom will next promote Dan Savage as the new White Martin Luther King. Shameful… PS our household Hispanic, Black and White… And Dan Savage is no Martin Luther King…
I like the show. Hilarious. Please renew it.
My household is an bi-racial family and we enjoy the show, so love the humor. I couldn’t think of a better cast:)
This show just objectified a young woman to get the young man in the family to change his political identification – and celebrated this. What a horrible message. Summary =
Stay at home Moms are dumb
Pretty girls who wear glasses should get contact lenses
Little girls who wear glasses are “geeks”
I don’t so much care about the political message, as much as I am angered they diminished the value of girls and women so significantly.
I love this show.
I love this show. It should be on for an hour.
I loved it. The advance publicity got me in but there was no follow-up. The cast was great; the stories engaging and the social significance of the troubles facing suburban upwardly mobile black folks perfect for the troubles of society today. Great show!
I think this is one of the funniest; craziest shows on TV. I love everything about it!!! Please renew this show for many more seasons to come!!!
It is anti white, they say stuff like we don’t like white people. Wow if white ople talks like that. Wait were not allowed, it goes both ways, take it off.
you do not understand humor, black humor
No. Why should there be “black” humour? White humour? Especially when the humour is designed to belittle someone else. Blacks shouldn’t be allowed to bash whites, and reverse. It seems as if whites have to walk on egg shells to be PC, and blacks can just bash whites anyway they want.
I agree with the others that say we don’t owe anybody anything for slavery. My relatives didn’t own slaves. And even if they did, that’s 150 years ago. We can’t change the past.
Whatever…I’m a middle-aged white woman and I love this show, one of my favorites. I think it’s a refreshing change from the dime a dozen sitcoms we’re used to. The family is great, their different personalities and how they interact with each other. Never miss an episode!
Please do not cancel. One of the best and funniest shows on TV!!!
I love this show please come back next season
please do not cancel this truly wonderful program. it is my favorite sit com. and yes I am white
Bring it back
many people just found out about this wonderful show, part of an abc-ethnic line-up that is funny enough in itself. i believe next season will soar in the number of viewers of different ethnicities, inevitably resulting in a standout block of of popular shows–for everyone.
i’ll certainly be watching.
Finally a show that reflects contemporary life in America. I love this show. I know these characters. I certainly hope enough of us speak up to keep this show on the air.
