For years, some people have been asking, “When is Smallville going to end? Isn’t he Superman yet?” Well, the series ending is now in sight. But who’s decision was it?
When Smallville began, it revolved around Clark Kent (Tom Welling), a high school student who was discovering his super powers. As time has gone on, he’s learned how to use his abilities and is now balancing his heroics with his work at the Daily Plant newspaper. The show’s current cast includes Allison Mack, Callum Blue, Cassidy Freeman, Erica Durance, and Justin Hartley.
Last season, The CW network moved Smallville from its usual Thursday night timeslot to Fridays. The ratings understandably dropped quite a bit but the network still renewed the show for a 10th season. The renewal had supposedly been hinging on whether or not Welling wanted to keep doing the series.
The decision has now been made that season 10 will be the show’s last. The network was supposed to make an official announcement at the upfronts but Welling jumped the gun and told HollywoodLife at an event on Tuesday night. The actor also reflected on what he’s learned by playing Clark Kent for so long. He said, “Once you think you have perfected things, you’ve got to keep practicing. There is always something to learn! It works for me and it will work for others.”

It remains to be seen who made the decision to end the show. Did the network decide to cancel it or was the choice made on the production side? Unless Welling (who’s now 33-years-old) decided that he’d had enough, it likely comes down to a mixture of the two and simple economics. The show will have been around for 10 seasons, has gotten more expensive to produce, and doesn’t bring as much ad revenue anymore.
On top of that, there are certainly more than enough episodes to keep the show running in syndication for a long time. By the end of the show’s run, there will be enough installments for a station to play once a day for seven months without repeating.
By announcing the ending a year in advance, the network can promote Smallville’s season 10 as the last and the producers will have ample time to plan how they want to wrap things up.
What do you think? Are you glad that Smallville’s coming to an end or should it keep going? Anything you’d like to see happen? Perhaps Lex Luthor’s return?

This show should not end! It’s just getting more interesting than ever and is a symbol of hope and good to many. This show is iconic.
Plz don’t. End it we watch it if we can but we insufe that as soon as the next season is on DVD
We are on it like whie on rice we watch it so much that we hav started watch from the beginning once again again if you end it Tom please grab and suit up. You are the next superman.
It would be a shame to end the series at the 10th season. During last episodes of the 10th season many things have been said: that Lex would come back, and he will be the ultimate dark power against Kal-El, about his flying skill, we would like to see that happening, and many more things that could happen in a new season. So we all hope, that our comments are not worthless, and that Tom,and all the crew will carry on with Smallville. All the best.
PLEASE DON’T END..
IT’S A WONDERFUL MOVIE.. I’D LOVE WATCHING SMALLVILLE.. I WANT TO SEE CLARK KENT FLYING AT THE NEXT EPISODE..
PLEASE DON’T END.
Please don’t end. I know you said you are going to end this year with Season 10 … but why? No … Smallville is a great show! And yes, bring Lana back! But no … maybe one more season? Season 11?
I think its about time they finished it all up. i mean its a fantastic show and the 10 seasons proves that. but i think there needs to be a transition between clarke kent and superman and you can’t have that while the show is called smallville. i am really enjoying this last season and seeing how they sum up year 10 of good television. i am glad atleast they have kept reasonably close to the comic books and i think after it has finished we will see a new dawn to say in the legend of the man of… Read more »
The thing about smallville is that it’s been running for so long and maybe it has lost its lust amongst people but if CW is cancelling smallville they’ve got alot to worry about, their wednesday night slot is empty, one tree hill should probably get cancelled now and with smallville gone they will need 4 new shows to boom the night sl0ts, and they cant do that.
They need to keep the show going, or come up with a new show to follow it up.
Hey All, i honestly dont agree that they should end smallville with season 10 come on people, i swear to god these directors are crappy!!!!!!!! they can’t write BULL you would think in season 10 ..they would get RID of tess mercer, RED arrow lol .. what a loser .. and some other unwanted characters .. and they would bring back LEX luthor ..considering his dad used the thingy to come from the other dimension .. and talk about a billionaire who was hiding out in a truck and got truck bombed!!!!!! like seriously they couldn’t find a way to… Read more »
PLEASE DONT END!! I HAVE EVERY SEASON AND HAVE WATCHED EVERY ONE AT LEAST 9 OR 10 TIMES!! MY LIFE WOULD NEVER BE THE SAME IF YOU ENDED IT NOW!! JUSTICE LEAGUE WITH TOM WELLING WOULD BE SUPER TIGHT THOUGH IF YOU MUST END THIS TIGHT SHOW!!!!!!!
I don’t know why the series has to end when He finally learns to fly in costume? Just have Him and the other actors continue and call it the newest new adventures of Superman!
It has to end with him flying in costume, so that any future movies or series can show him flying, which is what makes Superman, Superman. There’s been many movies of invincible type characters, but very few if any that show the super-human, actually FLYING. I too, wish Smallville had shown Clark able to fly even at the very start, and take the series in the direction of his earthly parents telling him it’s unwise for him to fly, as it would give away his uniqueness, causing him and his loved ones mega problems. But he still should’ve been able… Read more »
Well, I watched Smallville for about 5-6 seasons. Missed the first 4 as I’m not a mega couch potato like most people. I have a life besides TV. Anyway, so okay, Clark RUNS around and can do some other feats, but he is anything than super if you take into consideration the other Superman productions of the past. He doesn’t come across as invincible as there’s always something that can afflict him etc. He can be tossed around like normal humans, BY normal humans. Superman for real, you wouldn’t be able to budge him. Getting back to running… TEN YEARS… Read more »
