The dads aren’t coming back for a second season. Co-star J. August Richards has revealed that the NBC family drama series, Council of Dads, has been cancelled a week ahead of its season (now series) finale.
Airing on Thursday nights, the drama series begins as Scott Perry (Tom Everett Scott), a loving father of five, has his entire life’s plan thrown into upheaval by an unexpected health scare. After being diagnosed with cancer, he and his wife call on a few of their most trusted friends to step in as back-up dads to help guide and support his growing family – just in case Scott can’t be there to do it himself. The NBC show also stars Richards, Sarah Wayne Callies, Clive Standen, Blue Chapman, Emjay Anthony, Michele Weaver, Thalia Tran, Steven Silver, Kevin Daniels, and Michael O’Neill.
The first season of Council of Dads averages a meager 0.40 rating in the 18-49 demographic with just 2.82 million viewers in the Live+same day ratings.
The family drama series is one of the peacock network’s lowest-rated scripted series of the season. Other first-year NBC shows that have also been cancelled this season include Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector, Perfect Harmony, Indebted, Bluff City Law, and Sunnyside.
As mentioned, Richards broke the news of the cancellation, via an emotional Instagram post. Callies and Daniels also posted their own messages.

What do you think? Have you seen the Council of Dads TV show? Would you have watched a second season of this NBC series?
This was very upsetting to hear another good tv series was going to be cancelled…There are other shows that should be cancelled …very sad :'(
Really upset to hear about the cancellation of Counsel of Dad’s. I felt this show addressed issues of today and presented those issues in a positive attitude. Great story line and the cast was fantastic. Going to miss this “family”.
BiG Mistake cancelling Council of Dads!! Network Television is going to become extinct!
I hope someone else picks it up. Summer series what did you expect. Millenials aren’t watching network tv. 50 and 60 y/o are. I really enjoyed it. Come on Netflix or prime. It was a good show.
I am also upset to see this show canceled. I think it was given a wrong time slot. I think it was better a 9 or even 10 show and I also think the name might have been a little off-putting. But the show itself was really really wonderful. Loved all the actors and they did a great job in the story lines were relevant. It’s really sad to see this one go.
I just binge watched the entire 10 episodes & Loved it!!!! This show should be given a second chance. Great Cast & very versatile story line. PLEASE PLEASE bring it back.
Superb writing for realistic storylines. Great casting of actors who obviously enjoy working together and so appropriate during these times….NBC, I’m so disappointed. Surely there have been shows you took a chance on and in time the audience was onboard! Well, NBC you are well aware that you’re competing with so much social media. I can only hope this TV program shows up on another outlet like HULU, Netflix, Prime Video….anywhere! Council of Dads’ Producers, DON’T GIVE UP! Your stories need to be told!!!
LOVED this show!! I was so looking forward to see the stories continue…….. This show wasn’t really given a good chance. Please reconsider!!!
Are you kidding??? What an awesome show!!! We talk about diversity and what families look like today, and this show was all of that and more!!! Bring it back and promote it. I stumbled upon it and LOVED IT.
Council of Dads was a good show. I honestly don’t understand why you cancelled it. Honestly, if the major channels continue to cancel good shows people aren’t going to keep paying for cable.
So upset about Council not being renewed, wonderful family show, story lines addressing all kinds of family isssues and above all great choices of actors. Loved it, consider renewal please.
So sorry to hear about counsel of dads cancellation. Shows don’t seem to be given enough time to grow an audience I really enjoyed all the characters
I am so upset about Counsel of dads being canceled. This was a different type of show that wasn’t about cops or blood and guts. It was a family oriented show. It had many different story lines that many families can relate to. Please think about bringing it back. Please
I really loved Council of Dads and I’m sad and disappointed that there won’t be at least a second season. As someone who has lost her father to cancer in my 20s it brought so much emotion for me. Watching the family work through the grief process and have the “counsil” to support them was amazing. From experience, that is what it takes and I enjoyed seeing how they all helped to heal one another. Also I thoroughly enjoyed the diversity and inclusion that the writers included. I really hope another network or streaming service picks this show up. I’m… Read more »
Disappointed that NBC is canceling Council of Dads. Diversity. Inclusion. Characters that reflect many lives. Terrific storylines. A family that sticks together, works things out, flaws and all. So many shows on today are about the medical field, police and EMTs, attorneys, yet few are about family. This was. Reconsider, NBC. Perhaps putting it on in the spring/summer, in the middle of chaos occurring worldwide, wasn’t the best move. Try again. Give it a second season.
I’m Very upset that NBC canceled councils of dad I love the show I couldn’t wait to see it every Thursday night I hope another station picks up this show. Very disappointed at NBC
