The dads aren’t coming back for a second season. Co-star J. August Richards has revealed that the NBC family drama series, Council of Dads, has been cancelled a week ahead of its season (now series) finale.
Airing on Thursday nights, the drama series begins as Scott Perry (Tom Everett Scott), a loving father of five, has his entire life’s plan thrown into upheaval by an unexpected health scare. After being diagnosed with cancer, he and his wife call on a few of their most trusted friends to step in as back-up dads to help guide and support his growing family – just in case Scott can’t be there to do it himself. The NBC show also stars Richards, Sarah Wayne Callies, Clive Standen, Blue Chapman, Emjay Anthony, Michele Weaver, Thalia Tran, Steven Silver, Kevin Daniels, and Michael O’Neill.
The first season of Council of Dads averages a meager 0.40 rating in the 18-49 demographic with just 2.82 million viewers in the Live+same day ratings.
The family drama series is one of the peacock network’s lowest-rated scripted series of the season. Other first-year NBC shows that have also been cancelled this season include Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector, Perfect Harmony, Indebted, Bluff City Law, and Sunnyside.
As mentioned, Richards broke the news of the cancellation, via an emotional Instagram post. Callies and Daniels also posted their own messages.

What do you think? Have you seen the Council of Dads TV show? Would you have watched a second season of this NBC series?
NBC NEVER gave this diverse, intelligent, heartwarming, loving show a chance! WHY??? NBC’s sporatic scheduling of this show seemed to be it’s demise from the beginning. Not all of us fit into NBC’s age group of those who give ratings! Shame on NBC for cancelling this show! Hopefully another network or Netflix will continue this AMAZING show…I’m done watching NBC….
I’m with ya!
I’m done starting a serious from NBC just about done watching it all as well.
I loved this show and looked forward to it each week. The story and the actors are great. One of the best shows i have seen in a while. Dont understand why NBC wont give it a chance. It should not be on Thursdays though. Not to compete against long standing Greys Anatomy but other than that it should be given a chance. They rarely advertised it and it was on for such a short amount of time. Just try one more full season. in a world with so many bad things happening we need a show like this that… Read more »
Please do not cancel the C ouncil of Dads show. THIS IS THE BEST SHOW NBC has had in a long time. PLEASE THINK LONG AND HARD BEFORE DOING SO IT I S A GREAT SHOW!
Oh please ! One of the best shows all year .Its no wonder tv stinks…We need more shows like this.
I am sorry this show has been cancelled. IT was very moving and thought the subject matter and family issues applied to our lives today. I cried through so many episodes. Reminded me so much of Just Like Us Wonderful actors
I really wanted to like it, but I found almost all the actors on the annoying side. Personal taste. I was about to quit watching it, so now I guess I don’t have to worry. Sorry folks. Their diversity did seem forced, but mostly just not likeable folks, almost all of them.
I’m so disappointed that Council of Dads is being cancelled-especially at a time when we all need to remember
To be kind and supportive of each other.
This show was my favorite and of course stupid decision was made to cancel….so done with NBC….hopefully someone smart will pick it back up…..ugh. Goodbye NBC.
Yes i definatley would watch another season. Why do all the good wholesome shows get cancelled?
Somebody somewhere please pickup this excellent series! The cast, the coastal GA setting and the broad diverse story lines were outstanding and much valued in this senior couples living room. So much flashy junk fills the tv air today. Sure hope there is a channel out there with room for this quality show to shine. Thanks for what we got to see.
Beautiful show. I cried during every episode.
I loved the show. At first I was like okay we have the entire rainbow covered here we go again. But once I got into the show I fell in Love. OMG the kids are the best. I totally fell in love with JJ’s little face and wanted to just pinch his cheeks. The emotions I went through while watching the show really made me look forward to Thursday again. You guys should have brought it back for a second season.
NBC, this is a big mistake canceling this show. It’s a great show that follows something real that people can relate too. We need more shows like this one. Hopefully another network will pick it up
Oh, no, don’t cancel this show!! I love it.
Great show, a true reflection of our world today. Great actresses/actors. NBC needs more shows like this instead of another crime fighting drama. PLEASE GIVE IT ANOTHER CHANCE . NBC I feel is also to blame as it did very little to advertise and get viewers interested after the initial episode. To all involved , special thanks for a wonderful series
