The dads aren’t coming back for a second season. Co-star J. August Richards has revealed that the NBC family drama series, Council of Dads, has been cancelled a week ahead of its season (now series) finale.
Airing on Thursday nights, the drama series begins as Scott Perry (Tom Everett Scott), a loving father of five, has his entire life’s plan thrown into upheaval by an unexpected health scare. After being diagnosed with cancer, he and his wife call on a few of their most trusted friends to step in as back-up dads to help guide and support his growing family – just in case Scott can’t be there to do it himself. The NBC show also stars Richards, Sarah Wayne Callies, Clive Standen, Blue Chapman, Emjay Anthony, Michele Weaver, Thalia Tran, Steven Silver, Kevin Daniels, and Michael O’Neill.
The first season of Council of Dads averages a meager 0.40 rating in the 18-49 demographic with just 2.82 million viewers in the Live+same day ratings.
The family drama series is one of the peacock network’s lowest-rated scripted series of the season. Other first-year NBC shows that have also been cancelled this season include Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector, Perfect Harmony, Indebted, Bluff City Law, and Sunnyside.
As mentioned, Richards broke the news of the cancellation, via an emotional Instagram post. Callies and Daniels also posted their own messages.

What do you think? Have you seen the Council of Dads TV show? Would you have watched a second season of this NBC series?
It figures. It was fated to happen. If a show leaves you feeling uplifted, or ready to celebrate life and the people around you, it gets cancelled. “God Friended Me” ring any bells? Ridiculous. Here we are in 2020, reeling from Covid-19, murders by police officers caught on camera, rioting and looting in the streets, etc. And we can’t keep television shows on the air that show us how this world could be if we respected the only race that matters, The Human Race!
I am so upset with NBC canceling so many good shows this year, but furious with the cancelation of Council of Dads. One of the best shows ever in these times of sadness and turmoil.
We LOVED this show and we are so disappointed that it is cancelled. We would definitely watch another season!
I thought it was a great show that represented so many aspects of the lives we are leading today. Beautifully written and acted. I’m sorry they have been cancelled!
SERIOUSLY WHY?? Finally a great show with love, meaning, compassion, real life and all you ever do is cancel. WHY??? I am so sick of the stupid shows on TV. I might as well cancel everything and stop watching TV all together. It is to heart breaking.
I am going to stop watching summer shows especially on nbc. I like them a lot and then they cancel them The InBetween, The Village and now this show. Why bother putting them on and then cancelling them? They are not given a chance and then there’s a bunch of dumb game shows. I give up. Quality tv apparently doesn’t matter.
Loved watching the Village too & seeing how the characters developed. Now another fav gone. Sick of dumb game show & reruns not to mention the predictable “law or crime shows”. May as well read a good book because we lose any good show we get hooked on.
I love this show, bring it back next season. NBC also seems to take the good shows off.
Yes I would watch another season. I love this show. How are we supposed to know if they all survived the hurricane? What about the baby? What about Robin and Sam? What about all of it?! Finally something decent to watch and just like that it’s gone.
Why! Why! There is so much garbage on TV (reality shows-that aren’t real) among other things. A show with heart, drama, and love gets cancelled all the time. Every time I find a good TV show to watch it’s cancelled. I’m seriously thinking about not even watching any new show from now on, because if they are good and I do like them, they are lucky to make 1 season let alone get renewed. Maybe hopefully another network will pick them up??
My feelings exactly! Every time I get drawn into a new show & become a faithful viewer…poof….they cancel it. I too am sick of dumb game shows & reruns
show was boring as heck, predictable and underwhelming, sadly the best reason to watch, Tom Everett Scott, was killed off in the 1st episode, ( does he EVER live through a whole show ) wont be missed, cliched from start to finish, nothing new or entertaining
BRING BACK Council of Dads!!! A great show featuring so many different characters and their struggles to carry on after a life changing event! It shows how individuals can love and support each other despite differences and personal struggles. YES, I would watch another season! This show was way better than AMY reality show taking up air time! I am VERY disappointed NBC would cancel such a beautiful story. BTW, this is the 1st time I have EVER written in support of a TV show…..what does that tell you!
I cannot believe they cancelled Council of Dads! This is my go to show on Thursday night
I love this show! So sad to hear it will not continue into a second season. The cast has such great chemistry. Shows like this show viewers how families can have their ups and downs and still love and support one another. And it’s not just family but the strong ties you can have with friends. I looked so forward to Thursday evening to watch Counsel of Dads. I hope the decision to cancel this show will some how be changed.
Good wholesome show. Looked forward to watching. What can be done to bring this show back for a 2nd season?
Yes I would have watched more seasons of this show. The writing is excellent and pulls you into this family every week. I am not happy that we won’t get to learn more about this family and the Counsel of Dads. Not happy! Please say they have changed their minds and will be bringing it back
