The dads aren’t coming back for a second season. Co-star J. August Richards has revealed that the NBC family drama series, Council of Dads, has been cancelled a week ahead of its season (now series) finale.
Airing on Thursday nights, the drama series begins as Scott Perry (Tom Everett Scott), a loving father of five, has his entire life’s plan thrown into upheaval by an unexpected health scare. After being diagnosed with cancer, he and his wife call on a few of their most trusted friends to step in as back-up dads to help guide and support his growing family – just in case Scott can’t be there to do it himself. The NBC show also stars Richards, Sarah Wayne Callies, Clive Standen, Blue Chapman, Emjay Anthony, Michele Weaver, Thalia Tran, Steven Silver, Kevin Daniels, and Michael O’Neill.
The first season of Council of Dads averages a meager 0.40 rating in the 18-49 demographic with just 2.82 million viewers in the Live+same day ratings.
The family drama series is one of the peacock network’s lowest-rated scripted series of the season. Other first-year NBC shows that have also been cancelled this season include Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector, Perfect Harmony, Indebted, Bluff City Law, and Sunnyside.
As mentioned, Richards broke the news of the cancellation, via an emotional Instagram post. Callies and Daniels also posted their own messages.

What do you think? Have you seen the Council of Dads TV show? Would you have watched a second season of this NBC series?
I thought it was a good show and I will definitely miss it
This makes me so sad! I love the show and watch each episode at least twice!!! Please keep it!!!
This is crap. Why do they cancel all the good famiky shows. Of course 18-35 arent watching. Cmon nbc give it a couple seasons more. Shirley a fan
NBC has seen the last of me. I am not renewing for any show beginning now. I guess if a show is good they feel the need to cancel it. Council of Dads is great. NBC needs to be cancelled!!!
Loved this show. Love the ensemble. So sorry it’s canceled
I am really disappointed!!! I love the show!!! I am pretty tired of NBC airing new shows and canceling them after the first season. I’m not going to waste my time watching any new shows on NBC because you don’t give them a chance. I sincerely hope another station has the sense to pick up this show. We need more shows like this one and a lot less pointless reality shows!!! Shame on you NBC!!!!
I really like Council of Dads and looked forward to watch it every week. It’s so sad the networks cancell all the good shows and putting on game shows. I definitely was looking forward to the next season with this show. NBC please put Council of Dads back on.
I can’t believe NBC is cancelling this “excellent” show. The cast couldn’t be any better and the storylines are so current and emotional. I have now had 4 of the shows I watched be cancelled. I can’t understand why you’re getting rid of good quality TV. If Chicago PD goes, I guess I’ll just either stop watching.
I loved this show. Only thing I watched all week. Please bring it back!
One of the best new shows. It’s so real life!! Please give it another chance!!!
For once, there was a show of real life of love, devotion, hardships…etc that as a family we loved. Can’t believe that it was canceled
I was devastated (even cried) when I read about it. I just dont get it 🙁
Please bring it back
PLEASE DON’T CANCEL THIS WONDERFUL SHOW – WE LOOK FORWARD TO THIS SHOW EVERY WEEK – WHAT IDIOT THINKS THIS SHOW SHOULD BE CANCELLED. WHATEVER STATION PICK IT UP WILL DEFINITELY PROFIT FROM IT.
I love it and would watch a second season. I like the drama and the characters. It’s too bad. So much betterment than any reality show that would replace it.
LOVE this show!!! Whole family loves it 19 yr old, 26, 30, 32, 34 yr old children included!!! Hoping another network picks it up or NBC realizes their error and relaunches it in the fall!?!? Please
I really LIKE Council of Dads & have made sure to watch every episode. I was looking forward to season 2 & am now very disappointed & sad that there will be no “next season”. I think it is a really good show addressing many of todays issues with a realistic approach. I will miss following the Perry family & the lives of the “dads” as they grow & evolve. Personally I think cancelling the program was a mistake.
