Last summer, CBS found ratings success with new series Under the Dome. This summer, they introduced Extant, a sci-fi series starring Halle Berry. Has it been a hit as well? Will the series be renewed for a second season or will it be cancelled instead?
On Extant, astronaut Molly Woods (Berry) returns to Earth after a year-long solo mission in outer space. Her reunion with her family is thrown into turmoil when it’s learned that she’s pregnant. Others in the cast include Goran Visnjic, Pierce Gagnon, Hiroyuki Sanada, Camryn Manheim, Grace Gummer, and Michael O’Neill.
Debuting on July 9th, the series got off to a decent start and attracted a 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.58 million viewers. In week two, the ratings saw a moderate decline which is not unexpected for a new series. Unfortunately, the numbers took a big dip in week three.

The ratings seem to have now leveled off and the show consistently draws a 1.0 rating in the demo with under six million viewers. Those are hardly impressive numbers for an expensive show with a movie star as the lead.
Last year’s Under the Dome was profitable for CBS even before the series aired, thanks to a deal with Amazon and others. CBS has a streaming deal with Amazon for Extant but it’s unclear if that will be enough to get this particular show a second season renewal.
Series creator Mickey Fisher says that he has big plans for season two but has assured fans of a satisfying finale if the show is cancelled. He believes the series has a 50/50 chance.

I love this show and I think it’s one of the best shows since x-files. Yet, I have my doubts as to how captivating this story line can be without it turning idiotic. Remember when V came out…. Yes I’m dating my self, but that show captured everyone and then they turned it into a series and it got super stupid. Would hate to see that happen to this show.

This is a great 4 hour made for TV movie!…What? You say it is still on the air?…Can they rerunning the last hour over and over?
All right! Enough tomfoolery. This just once again proves my old adage that winning an Oscar might give you a life-long career but certainly does not make you a good actor!
You guys posting here that this show should stay on need to really get your eyes, ear, and brain scanned by medical professionals asap.. this show is pure garbage.. the last two eps aired last week were a joke to put it mildly.. the acting is High school Drama class level, (Berry walking around in either a zombie strut or when awake kept screaming about “my baby”) Plotlines are a disaster, things appear and dissappear so much I can’t even begin to start, I would say just watch this sober again (Im assuming you guys had to be on some… Read more »
Don’t hold back just because you’re afraid of hurting someone’s feelings Andre. Tell us what you really think about the show.
I think we should wait until ‘Andre’ recovers from his illegally induced stupor and then he can tell us what he really believes. Someone who is that passionate about any TV show can’t be in their right mind.
There’s two different storylines which only connect thematically. The story of Ethan, a D.A.R.Y.L like child is something new and fresh with a lot of well-thought out insight. Combined with that is the morality of ‘what makes us human’. However, the main storyline of a human pregnant with an alien-child has been done ad nauseum. V did it, 4400 did it, Fallen Skies is currently doing it, and there are many, many others. It isn’t particularly interesting or fresh. Please save Halle from further embarrassment. I had so much hope for this one. I hate to acknowledge that but the show is awfully boring, expensive and predictable. Falling Skies also should go. I love Halle but this one gotta go.
Weak show – cancel it
I love the concept of the show, but the writing seems rushed. For example, and this may be a spoiler. When Molly found the little girl in the restaurant the girl said the woman left in a brown car. Well children don’t talk like that. She would have just said they left in a car. You u would have had ask can you describe it what color was it. I would definitely be extremely disappointed if Extant was canceled. It is an intelligent program with plenty of excitement and nail-biting scenarios. The story is quite complex, so I can understand if it takes some time to gather attention. However, the acting is impressive by the entire cast and the show definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat. It also inspires a lot of thought about our future. I like Extant BUT don’t want to wait around ANOTHER 9 months to see another season. If it were back on in the Fall or Spring, yes, but not if it means having to wait another 9 months to see it. It was supposed to be ONE season, but it seems “they’re” (the networks) all getting greedy, if they see a show being a hit, they want to drag it out Summer after Summer. This show has really grown on my husband and me. We are left after each episode with a pensive expectation for the next episode and we are never disappointed. It would be a real shame to cancel this show. The actors all have a very interesting and dynamic chemistry. Please don’t cancel this show!! There’s so much garbage on TV today that dumbs down the psyche. I believe as the word of the show makes the rounds, it will be a great success!
I really enjoy this show & hope it is renewed. However, if I don’t get to see this hybrid alien baby soon, I think I’m going to SCREAM!
