While NBC has cancelled the original Law & Order, the network isn’t about to let Law & Order: Special Victims Unit go. It’s one of their highest-rated shows in the target demographic.
Law & Order: SVU revolves around the detectives and prosecutors associated with the New York City Police Department’s 16th precinct. Castmembers have included B.D. Wong, Christopher Meloni, Dann Florek, Ice-T, Mariska Hargitay, Richard Belzer, Stephanie March, Tamara Tunie, Adam Beach, Diane Neal, Michaela McManus, and Michelle Hurd.
The series began back in September 1999 on NBC. It registered as the 40th most-watched show of the season and was still renewed. In year two, it moved up to #25 and then peaked in season three, at #14.
The cop drama’s essentially been in decline ever since but, considering the poor shape of the rest of NBC’s schedule, it’s still a top performer for the peacock network.
To no surprise, NBC has renewed SVU for next season. No word on when season 12 will debut but the network is supposed to release its schedule on Sunday.

I am so HAPPY that there will be a season 12. It is one of my favorite shows……Now all they have to do to keep the rating up is…….put Benson and Stabler together. That will shoot the ratings through the roof.

i love svu expecially elliot and olivia they best get together soon i heard that season 12 will be airing in september as mariska said she will begin filming on july 1st you can watch law and order season finale on http://www.ch131.com thats where i watch all the american shows because im english and dont want to wait i watched all of season 11 on that website as they havent even aired in england yet

i friggin LOVE SVU- been watchin it since 2004.. OMG.. i love the cast.. i love the dialogue.. its ALL HOT- mariska and chris- cant getta better ‘on the scene’ team-

Worst finale ever. i fast forwarded most of the 2nd half and laugh at the plot and dialouge. I may not watch next season. Regular Law & Order is so much better.

um no. there’s more humor in SVU, there’s more depth to each character, and SVU shows how cases can affect EVERYONE, not just the victims. i admit, the guest stars lately have been disappointing, the writing is at times just ridiculous, etc. etc. but, as a true SVU fanatic, i’ll never forget previous seasons when there were intense scenes, emotions and dialouge [i suggest you watch “911,” “Undercover,” “Rockabye,” “Manogomy,” and “Intoxicated”] why else has, say, mariska hargitay been nominated six times consecutively for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series? it’s because time and time again she puts great effort… Read more »
Yes Law and Order:SUV should continue. It consistently delivers a high quality dramatic product and like all of the L & O franchises, it is worth the investment in time to watch. That said, I think the show should return to it roots and that means that the show will not bend over backwards to emphasize Stabler and Benson. In fact, it might be time to introduce a couple of new detectives and the show returned to more of an ensemble driven show.
