Starz was very happy with the early reception of their new Outlander TV show so they gave it an early season two renewal. The cable channel has often given quick renewals but the series are then often cancelled after two seasons. Will Starz regret giving Outlander a second year order so soon? Would it have been cancelled if they had waited?
The Outlander series revolves around Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), a married combat nurse from 1945. She finds herself mysteriously thrown back in time, to 1743 Scotland, and forced to marry another man to save her life. A passionate affair is ignited. The rest of the cast includes Sam Heughan, Tobias Menzies, Graham McTavish, Gary Lewis, Annette Badland, Stephen Walters, Laura Donnelly, Lotte Verbeek, James Fleet, Duncan Lacroix, Roderick Gilkison, Simon Callow, Grant O’Rourke, Bill Paterson, and Simon Meacock.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.
1/29 update: Have you heard that season two has been cancelled? Well, it hasn’t.
Final season averages: 0.26 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.04 million total viewers.

What do you think? Do you like the Outlander TV show? Do you think it should have been renewed for a second season or cancelled instead?
Just watched the first episode and being a HUGE fan of the books I thought it was great! I always knew it would make a good series and I am looking forward to more!
I love the show and can’t wait for more episodes. I’m looking forward to future seasons as the story travels globally & the characters of Outlander mature. Thank you to Starz for believing in this project and thanks to Ron D. Moore and his cast & crew for bringing Outlander to life.
Excuse me, but I’m absolutely astounded by this article’s frivolity. Outlander is a new series that’s just started, with increasing ratings, so what is the point of asking about cancellation after only 2 episodes? Who can feel honestly entitled to answer that? To say the least I consider it very unrespectful for a team of very talented people that have been working for over a year. But I know well that light idle criticism is far easier than actually DOING something (go and get yourself a life and see what’s like to be in the “doing” side). As for my… Read more »
I am just curious what reason are you so upset for? This article is on a site that says TV Series finale. If you read anything they post on ratings it says the same thing. No reason to get nasty about anything. Seems to me you have some idle criticism on someone that wrote something.
I’ve been a fan since the first book came out, and I have read them all. For some reason, I never imagined how any of the characters should look; however, when I recently opened my copy of OUTLANDER, I immediately recognized their faces. The casting is perfect, and I think the series is very well done (I’m a big STARZ fan anyway). I hope STARZ continues to bring these wonderful books to the screen.
Was really worried they wouldn’t do the books justice but I’m very pleased. Love Jamie & Claire. Re-reading book 1 again, after 15 years it is new again. Looking forward to 8 seasons.
I don’t have cable tv and am -trying- to be patient while I wait for Season 1 to be released on dvd. The series looks so good that it’s very hard to wait! I’ve been reading all the blogs and interviews online, and looking for tartan plaid fabric to buy. Such fun! Thank you Diana and Starz!
Ginny, check out the Starz website. I believe you can watch episodes.
Even though I know the story, each week just keeps getting better and better.
Waited in great anticipation and some trepidation, I confess, for this. I couldn’t be more pleased – characters are great, sets are great, Scotland is spectacular. I am re-reading all of the books before I read Ms. Gabaldon’s latest as I want to savour it. I hope that this series goes on for many years. If they continue on the path they are on now I see great years ahead. My very good friend really enjoyed it and she has not read any of the books.
Probably the only similarities to GoT, which this series is frequently compared to, are A)a huge volume of work to pull from, ie 8 going on 9 novels, and B) a huge, rabid fan base. The adaptation has been put in the right hands. The casting has been superb. The scenery/costumes/ location shooting is breathtaking. Moore has stayed true to the books’ overall storylines & characters. It is more enjoyable than I ever imagined. Most of us (fans) had little confidence they could get this close to the beloved characters in our hearts & minds. A solid viewership for years… Read more »
Outlander TV show is amazing. True to the book and TV characters did a phenomenal likeness to the story characters. I recommended the books to many and also recommend this TV show as well. I hope we see all 8 books put to life on the screen. Applause to all who made it happen! Thank you for such great story telling. All about human kindness.
Splendid! Great casting…great production values…First & last books of the 8 book series are the best. Keep the series going!
I love everything about this show!
Love this one… FINALLY, something really different. We were having trouble w/the accents the first couple of shows. Then I figured out that if we turned on the Closed captioning on our tv …. Voila! Now we can just read what they’re saying. Makes all the difference. Sure hope it stays on for a while and doesn’t get cancelled.
I love the books and am happy that the TV series is following closely to the books. They have done a great job picking the characters. Love Jamie & Claire. Glad it has been renewed.
I like it… there is a story line with interesting “what ifs”
i love it
