As you’ve no doubt heard by now, the high-rated Roseanne TV show was cancelled by ABC following some disturbing tweets by star Roseanne Barr. While she is no longer welcome at the alphabet network, what about the rest of the Conner clan? Could they return in a spin-off, without Barr?
A family comedy on the ABC television network, Roseanne originally ran for nine seasons, between 1988 and 1997. Original stars Barr, John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, Laurie Metcalf, Michael Fishman, Alicia Goranson, and Sarah Chalke returned, alongside newcomers Emma Kenney, Ames McNamara, and Jayden Rey. Returning guest stars included Johnny Galecki, Sarah Bernhard, Estelle Parsons, James Pickens Jr., Natalie West, and Adilah Barnes. The sitcom centers on working-class couple Roseanne and Dan Conner (Barr and Goodman), their family, and friends.
Deadline reports that executive producers Gilbert and Tom Werner (Carsey-Werner Productions) are planning to meet with executive producer/showrunner Bruce Helford and some of the Roseanne writers in the next few days. The plan is to discuss the possibility of continuing with the show in some form, without Barr. The cast has enjoyed working with one another and they are reportedly open to hearing ideas on how they could continue to do so. ABC is not involved at this point but would likely be pitched on the spin-off if a suitable idea could be found.
The Mindy Project creator Mindy Kaling and Girls creator Lena Dunham both offered to create spin-offs for members of the Conner clan.

I will do the spin off of your show starring Darlene’s cool kids https://t.co/5A2129BTl0

Coming up with a suitable spin-off idea may be the easiest part of the equation and sources believe it is ultimately unlikely to work out, for a number of reasons. The biggest issue could be Barr herself. Aside from starring in the sitcom, she was an executive producer and is presumed to have a partial ownership of the series. It seems unlikely that she would willingly allow a spin-off to happen.
Interestingly, this is not the first time that a Conner spin-off has been considered. During the final season of the original sitcom’s run, Barr, Carsey-Werner Productions, and ABC were in talks to do a spin-off with Roseanne Conner in a new setting. ABC ultimately passed on the project because the price was too high. CBS and FOX each considered it but then passed on the project. NBC wasn’t interested at all.
What do you think? Would you watch a Roseanne spin-off, without Barr? Would it be a hit?
Sure I’d watch. Many people have done much worse and without consequences. This has affected so many people involved with the show. It’s too bad & I wish them all the very best of luckNn6C
They could make a show without her but it just won’t be the same.
According to her, the tweet was the fault of medicines, so I’m that after a little delay, all will be forgiven and we will see a glorious return.
I’ll bet that plans are already in motion behind the scenes.
NO. it wont be the same.
No let it die. Hated show then can’t stomach it now
This is like asking…Would you watch Supergirl…if Supergirl wasn’t in the show.
You’re comparing Roseanne Barr to Supergirl. Supergirl is an action show, there are no other heroes in that show. Roseanne at least has other main characters.
So if Flash was removed from The Flash…or…Green Arrow was removed from The Arrow…you’d watch because there are “other heroes”????? Roseanne IS the main character…just like Flash & Arrow. And BTW, pretty sure the other actors in Supergirl feel like they are a valuable contribution to the show….heroes or not.
NO, I would not watch without Rosanne. I never watched the old shows but I LOVED the new ones. You and everyone else knew what Rosanne was like. What she said was wrong but people are always saying things they shouldn’t say, unfortunately that’s life! A lot of people loved Rosanne’s new show NOT NECESSARILY ROSANNE, IT IS/WAS FUNNY! You are making a mistake.
Spin off: The Conners Roseanne runs away and Dan is left to pick up the pieces. Struggling on a small pension and social security and left to babysit his grandchildren everyday, Jackie talks him into seeing a therapist. In the waiting room he meets Claire Conner, the anti Rosanne, played by Phylicia Rashād. David Hyde Pierce plays their therapist. A love story between senior citizens from opposite worlds ensues, a Golden Girl’s Romeo and Juliet saga. Claire lives off a trust fund, never having worked a day in her life. She spent her youth in Swiss boarding schools to avoid… Read more »
Good grief, no. ABC and everyone involved knew who Roseanne was and has been for years. They ignored it in order to make money. For them to come out now and speak – they should have spoken before or not aligned themselves with her brand of racism and conspiracy theories and hate.
I wasn’t interested in the show before and still wouldn’t be interested. Just not my type of show. I do feel sorry for all the actors and crew that lost their jobs over Roseanne’s ugly racist comments and feel the network did the right thing. Everyone has their own opinion…
No I would not be Interested in the least
Nope, wouldn’t unless Roseanne is in it.
Please bring back Roseanne Barr. No one is perfect. If we are all honest, one time or another we have all said something awful. I know I have had something racist said to me in this life and I am white, we get over it. I have seen the reruns tons of times, and the new shows were so good, made me laugh and that’s hard to do. Our leader in the big house says horrible things all the time with names attached and no one says a word about it. not fair. he is setting the example, do you… Read more »
No, the show was awful, I only watched because of Rosanne. Sara is awful, as are the actors (?) that play her kids, John Goodman looks like he’s on his last leg, Laura use to be funny, but she didn’t seem to enjoy her part.
I wouldn’t watch it when Roseanne was on it, but if they do a spin off without her I would probably watch it.
Write her off the show, but don’t ‘throw out the baby with the bathwater. We all think things that we don’t say. If the woman hadn’t been part of Pres Obama’s Cabinet, would there still be all this hubbub? Even though I think this was a situation of no ‘common sense’ filter, how many people have to suffer?
Even if Valerie Jarrett had not been in President Obama’s cabinet, the racist nature of Roseann’s comments would remain the same. Actually, it wouldn’t be surprising if Mrs. Jarrett was targeted by Roseanne Barr BECAUSE she was in Obama’s cabinet.
Kill off the racist (Barr) and it’s got a shot.
