As you’ve no doubt heard by now, the high-rated Roseanne TV show was cancelled by ABC following some disturbing tweets by star Roseanne Barr. While she is no longer welcome at the alphabet network, what about the rest of the Conner clan? Could they return in a spin-off, without Barr?
A family comedy on the ABC television network, Roseanne originally ran for nine seasons, between 1988 and 1997. Original stars Barr, John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, Laurie Metcalf, Michael Fishman, Alicia Goranson, and Sarah Chalke returned, alongside newcomers Emma Kenney, Ames McNamara, and Jayden Rey. Returning guest stars included Johnny Galecki, Sarah Bernhard, Estelle Parsons, James Pickens Jr., Natalie West, and Adilah Barnes. The sitcom centers on working-class couple Roseanne and Dan Conner (Barr and Goodman), their family, and friends.
Deadline reports that executive producers Gilbert and Tom Werner (Carsey-Werner Productions) are planning to meet with executive producer/showrunner Bruce Helford and some of the Roseanne writers in the next few days. The plan is to discuss the possibility of continuing with the show in some form, without Barr. The cast has enjoyed working with one another and they are reportedly open to hearing ideas on how they could continue to do so. ABC is not involved at this point but would likely be pitched on the spin-off if a suitable idea could be found.
The Mindy Project creator Mindy Kaling and Girls creator Lena Dunham both offered to create spin-offs for members of the Conner clan.

I will do the spin off of your show starring Darlene’s cool kids https://t.co/5A2129BTl0

Coming up with a suitable spin-off idea may be the easiest part of the equation and sources believe it is ultimately unlikely to work out, for a number of reasons. The biggest issue could be Barr herself. Aside from starring in the sitcom, she was an executive producer and is presumed to have a partial ownership of the series. It seems unlikely that she would willingly allow a spin-off to happen.
Interestingly, this is not the first time that a Conner spin-off has been considered. During the final season of the original sitcom’s run, Barr, Carsey-Werner Productions, and ABC were in talks to do a spin-off with Roseanne Conner in a new setting. ABC ultimately passed on the project because the price was too high. CBS and FOX each considered it but then passed on the project. NBC wasn’t interested at all.
What do you think? Would you watch a Roseanne spin-off, without Barr? Would it be a hit?
Definitely would not watch.
No wouldn’t watch with Roseanne , or without .
Sure good for them, will definitely watch. One monkey don’t stop the show! Pun intended.
Is the show about Darlene? If that’s so, no way. I can’t stand Gilbert. I can’t stand her on The Talk, and I couldn’t stand to watch her on the show. She adds nothing! No personality whatsoever–on the show, in addition to The Talk.
Without Roseanne?? Nope, won’t watch it–it won’t work without her. Goodman and Metcalfe are great, but this particular show needs the character of Roseanne.
No
No put Roseanne back on or no she has said some things that was not right but the other side of the coin said thing even just as bad or even worst they are still on so stop the crap or a lot of us will be talking like a brit from watching the British station it is getting tough enough to go to the movies I don’t support the movies no more haven’t for the last 3 years tv is next we go to live theater now in our town just watched the toneys and had to turn it… Read more »
Roseanne Barr should have to pay everyone their salaries, as she’s solely responsible for them being pulled. What a disaster for those involved (except her). She’s a bigoted, racist piece of garbage. I don’t think I would watch a spinoff, since they’d probably have to reference her in every show in one way or the other.
Yes, I would watch a spinoff, as long as that bigot, Roseanne Barr, wasn’t involved in any way, shape, or form.
Do you live on the moon white, black, brown, yellow, red people all have said roud things so stop your wining
Yes, I think a lot folks would enjoy a spinoff of the Conner clan. Roseanne would be dearly missed, but the others could hold their own. All the others actors should have a change to see the series through, and as the old adage goes: “The show must go on.”
Only if John Goodman is included with all the others.
Yes to spinoff — Goodman and Sis and kids were great. Suggest getting “Arnie” (Tom Arnold) back, too. He’s great.
Yes I would. Although the funny side of Rosanne is going to be missed. I think they can pull it off.
I would not watch. Roseanne kept the rest of the Conner’s sane.
The show wouldn’t be the same. I like the spin that the writers put on various current topics. The show brings awareness to current issues with a comic twist. Sometimes it’s better than watching all the negative/depressing news, with their spin on current topics.
I would not watch the show without Roseanne it would not be good.
