The second season, aka Angel of Darkness, takes place in New York City in 1897 where Sara Howard (Fanning) has opened a pioneering private detective agency. The Alienist is presumed to have been cancelled, so there won’t be a third season. Could it be revived someday? Stay tuned for further updates.
Telly’s Take
Will TNT cancel or renew The Alienist for season three? Angel of Darkness is based on the sequel novel by Caleb Carr. A third book has been published and a fourth, The Alienist at Armageddon, is in the works. So a third season could be based on one of those or, the producers could make an original story. TNT aired two episodes a week and season two’s ratings were quite low so, there’s a good chance there won’t be a third season anyway. I’ll update this page with breaking developments. Status update: The last original episode of The Alienist aired in 2020, so the show has presumably been cancelled.

What do you think? Were you hoping that The Alienist TV show would be renewed for a third season? Are sorry that TNT cancelled this TV series, instead?
Please, we need season 3! Then 4, 5, 6…
Please have a season 3 please!!
I love this show. Why do they cancel really entertaining programs?
I really enjoy this show. It has good actors and a story line that keeps your interest. I would think the timing that it was aired might have something to do with the ratings. The first season was during the winter season. Please bring back a third season.
Yes, we hope there is a season 3,4,5 and more
yes! bring back The Alienist for season 3 and a series! Must keep cast, direct, set designer, costume designer and all involved to maintain quality. Write original script with Caleb Carr as consultant – he cant write fast enough to produce series. Best limited series of all – if have to go to streaming service. We will follow! But, must keep 3 main characters the same – they cannot be replaced.
Yes, it is a Great Show something different, not the typical show.
I hope they renew for season 3
I am so hoping there will be more Alienist shows. The show is a remarkable study in history in the fields of medicine, social rights, and women’s rights.
I think The Alienist is a good show but I think it should be cancelled.
I for one came upon this show too late and accidentally and I LOVE IT. I hope it doesn’t get cancelled and I’m hungry foe season three and more. Love period stories, we need more of them. The only thing that puzzles me is the sound of the voices of Ms Fanning and Daniel Bruhl. He sounds monotone and lifeless and she seems to be void of any feelings, and somewhat robotic. Everyone else is fine and should not be cancelled. These stories have a bite to them, not like most of the lineup of ridiculous shows being offered now.
I really enjoy this show as it keeps me guessing. I would be disappointed if it were to be canceled. It’s not often that such an original, period piece comes along.
I enjoyed the Alienist program. Season 2 was great & I’m looking forward to Season 3!!! Keep it coming. The location, the 1st woman whom worked in the police station to become a detective, other characters parts, late 19th century alone, clothes, how people lived is very interesting.
I think it is a great show!!!!!! Please bring it back for a few more seasons.
Oh I hope there is a 3rd and 4th and so on of the Alienest I love the series and will hopefully be able to continue to wait each week to pass for the next episode. Its exciting and gritty and keeps you on the edge of your seat for what is next.It would be a terrible loss to not continue filming the show even with the way the characters ended the last hour of season 2.I will be watching for season 3 to begin another nail biting season.
I hope it will be renewed. I enjoy the characters and different plots.
