It’s not like there was any question but NBC has confirmed that there won’t be a second season of The Slap, their low-rated Thursday night mini-series. The series ended as it began — with poor ratings.
On The Slap TV show, a birthday celebration comes to an abrupt halt when a man slaps another couple’s misbehaving child. It’s a small action that ends up deeply affecting all involved. The cast for the mini-series includes Peter Sarsgaard, Thandie Newton, Uma Thurman, Makenzie Leigh, Zachary Quinto, Dylan Schombing, Thomas Sadoski, Melissa George, Brian Cox, Lucas Hedges, Maria Tucci, Marin Ireland, and Penn Badgley.
The series got off to a very poor start in the ratings in February with the debut garnering a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.13 million viewers. The numbers took a big fall in week two, dropping more than 25% in the all-important demo.
The network cancelled their Thursdays at 10pm series, Allegiance, after five episodes and shifted The Slap to that later timeslot to finish out its run. The eight episodes ended up averaging a low 0.8 rating in the demo with 3.62 million viewers.
NBC promoted The Slap as a mini-series but, if it had been a ratings smash, they surely would have figured out a way to bring it back for a second season — potentially like “limited series” like Fargo or the UK’s Broadchurch. With such terrible ratings, that wasn’t going to happen and the network has confirmed that last night’s episode is indeed the last of the series.
What do you think? Did you like The Slap? Why do you think the ratings weren’t better? Would you have watched a second season of these characters?
I loved it.Never missed a show.Very dissapointed in it not coming back.Where do they get their ratings anyway?
I echo all the above replies. I found it to be one of the best series I have seen in a very
long time. Most viewers seem to prefer reality shows, sci-fis and as much violence as can be squeezed into an hour. Not me! I am glad that I recorded all 8, as I plan to watch thel again some time.
I loved the story! The acting was great! It was a deep, painful look at a “torn” family. Each week was thoughtful & sensitive. I can’t imagine that it received low ratings! So well done! Perhaps a different network would pick it up? It’s a shame. I think many viewers want more action/ sex/violence …… The Slap made you sit up, think, and feel. I will miss it but appreciate the ending! So well done!
My husband and I love this show. It was so realistic. Great acting and even better writing. I am so sorry this is ending. I don’t know how it would return because of the last episode but I’m sure the writers could come up with something. NBC needs to rethink canceling this series.
I recommend the book or the original Austrailan version of the show.
I recommend reading the book or watching the original Austrailan version
My wife and I loved this show. The concept was exceptional as was the writing, acting and directing. I think maybe it was too smart, too deep in its detailed and thoughtful exploration of our present society to be embraced as a network show. It was like a terrific indie movie or HBO/SHO mini-series. It would have been promoted quite differently if it had been on a premium channel.
Completely agree with your statement. Trying to pass this off as a filler for Parenthood was misleading and a mistake on NBC’s part. They weren’t at all similar, in my opinion. This was a great series, was meant to be limited, and was entertaining. Too bad others didn’t give it a chance.
I loved it too.
This show was really well done and had 3 very accomplished and famous actors in it at least. The script. acting, theme – it was all great. It’s very odd to me that the ratings were low. (probably because most people are into low quality reality type TV and can’t stomach a cerebral social TV program such as this one). Well done, all involved!! I loved it and wish you had a second season!
I never missed an episode. My favorite dramas always evolve around good acting and
good character studies. The Slap was all about this. The finale was everything I thought
it should be. Loved this series
This is one the the greatest show I’ve seen in years. Not sure what happened. The cast and their performances were outstanding. I didn’t know about it until I was told to watch so I pulled it up on Demand ad watched all 8 episodes. My feeling us that it lacked the proper marketing. I feel if everyone watched it the ratings would have been higher.
I enjoyed this show. Can’t understand its low ratings. Maybe NBC should have moved it to another night. I thought the acting was excellent. Exploring all involved & how it affected them. Guess NBC will dig up another reality series to subject the viewing public to.
I liked it! Sad that it didn’t receive higher ratings. I’m glad it was on and glad that I watched it!
I enjoyed the show and am disappointed it will not continue into a second season
We loved the show, great acting and story line. Wish another season would be filmed.
I thought it was going to be an 8 episode mini series. I didn’t know anyone was thinking of a follow-up. I really enjoyed it. Good writing and acting.
