As expected, Almost Family won’t be returning for a second season. The low-rated FOX TV show has been cancelled after one season of 13 episodes.
The Almost Family TV show stars Brittany Snow, Tim Hutton, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Emily Osment, Mo McRae, Mustafa Elzein, and Victoria Cartagena. Based on the Australian drama series Sisters, this show explores what it means to be a family and the potential emotional complications that new generations of In vitro fertilization (IVF) children can face. In the series, Julia Bechley (Snow) is an adult only child who has her world turned upside down. She learns that her father, Doctor Leon Benchley (Hutton), a pioneer in fertility, secretly used his own sperm to father over a hundred children. While still reeling from this revelation, Julia discovers that she has two new half-sisters — her former best friend, Edie Palmer (Echikunwoke), and ex-Olympic athlete Roxy Doyle (Osment). As the three daughters begin to reconcile their new reality, Julia starts life without having her dad by her side, Edie comes to grips with her sexuality, and Roxy faces adulthood out of the spotlight. The trio attempt to bond as unconventional sisters while dealing with new siblings as part of a rapidly expanding and very untraditional extended family.
The first season of Almost Family averaged a 0.44 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.53 million viewers. Airing on Wednesday nights, the series had a slow start in the ratings and the numbers got a lot worse as the weeks progressed. It’s FOX’s lowest-rated scripted series of the season.
A cancellation seemed certain when FOX pulled Almost Family from the schedule with just two installments remaining in the season. The network aired them on a Saturday night, more than a month later.
The cancellation comes as Hutton and a friend have been accused of raping a 14-year-old girl in 1983.
What do you think? Did you enjoy the Almost Family TV show? Would you have watched a second season on FOX?
I loved the show! Disappointed
I loved the show. I hope Hutton did not do what he is accused of.
Most likely would have watched. Can’t say I am not disappointed.
I would absolutely watch it if another network picks it up. I finally find a new show I enjoy and watched weekly (granted usually on-demand as my evenings are busy). Very disappointed it has been cancelled. Yet FOX continues to push out stupid cartoons.
I really loved this show and am very disappointed that it’s been cancelled. The premise was fresh and new and gave you food for thought about what constitutes a family. I would definitely watch season 2 if it gets picked up by another network.
I really enjoy character-driven programs that tell a story about the life of the characters. This was a very interesting concept. I don’t think that the show had the opportunity to really develop the characters’ storylines… I am of the opinion that most networks never give new programming a chance to get off the ground, that they cancel shows preemptively! Regarding the allegations pending against Timothy Hutton, that’s a legal matter. Given the storyline, he could have easily been written out of the show by going to jail… This isn’t the first show that that I became interested in that… Read more »
I think it is getting rediculous hollaring rape 37 years ago! What is wrong with these women, why didn’t they accuse then. I mean really, I am a woman, I don’t understand why? Trying to get rich? I really love the show, will watch if they bring Hutton back!
I watched entire season and yes I would have watched another
LOVED this show. The acting was superb and the writing one of the best dramas. I would definitely watch it if it was picked up by another network. So would the rest of my household
I watched every episode of Almost Family and enjoyed it. Naturally it got cancelled. I liked Flirty Dancing too and that is probably not coming back. Love Emergence and keeping my fingers crossed that is comes back. There are so many shows on for many seasons that I have never watched even one episode. Some shows I have never even heard of that get awards and shows that deserve awards never get them like The Good Doctor and Freddie Highmore. I end up watching old reruns of shows from years ago to be entertained because so many of the good… Read more »
Since “Almost Family” starring Brittany Snow has been cancelled by FOX, how about an “American Dreams” reboot starring Ms. Snow as Meg Pryor, again? “Almost Family” never deserved a chance, but “American Dreams” should have in the 2000’s on NBC. That show only lasted 3 seasons and it took place in the 1960s, BTW. I need it to come back and take place in the early 1980’s!
Please don’t cancel PRODIGAL SON!!! It’s my favorite show this year.
I really liked the show and all of the possible ways the story could go. Very disappointed ☹️
I enjoyed it…so of course it got canceled. I expect Good Girls to get canceled next
Almost Family is based on the Australian show Sisters, which was delightful, strange and comedic. The American show had none of the mostly lighthearted feeling or humor of the Australian show. It took a tricky subject and didn’t treat it in a tricky manner. It was awful. I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did.
