It looks like Constantine is staying cancelled. The low-rated NBC series was officially dropped by the network last month but the studio, Warner Bros. TV, kept hope alive by shopping season two to other channels.
Constantine showrunner Daniel Cerone had said that the casts and writer contracts would run out this month and now, Cerone says that all options have been exhausted. Via Twitter, he wrote:
I promised I’d share news when I had it — sadly, that news is not good. The cast and writers of Constantine are being released from their contracts. The studio tried to find a new home for the show, for which we’re forever grateful, but those efforts didn’t pan out. I’m sorry, I wasn’t provided any information on the attempts to sell the show elsewhere. All I can report is that the show is over.
Many ingredients went into this TV series. From the dedicated cast that breathed these characters to life, led by Matt Ryan as the comic-made-flesh embodiment of John Constantine, to the exceptionality talented crew that put unreal images on screen, to the original Hellblazer writers and artists who gifted us a universe.
As a general principle, writers don’t choose a writing career to achieve stardom. Whatever demons or insecurities drove them to find freedom of expression through written words generally keeps writers comfortably obscure behind their words. Nor do people choose writing as a means to financial freedom. I’d venture to guess that most who set out to write professionally never receive a paycheck for their hopeful scribbles or key strokes.
In fact, nobody I know ever chose a writing career — it chose them. You write because that’s what you do. Like breathing, it just happens and you have to do it and you just hope that someday somebody out there notices what you’re trying to say.
If that’s the dream of writers, than the writers of Constantine lived the dream, because we’re leaving behind wild and passionate fans who believe in and were moved by what we tried to do. To leave such a significant, dedicated and active fan base on the table — that’s the real sadness. You all deserve many years of the series we set out to make, and we’re disappointed that we couldn’t deliver that to you. The good news is that Constantine will live on for years in many more forms. But our time as caretakers has ended.
Thank you for letting us in.
Daniel Cerone
What do you think? Did you like the Constantine TV show? Would you have paid to watch a second season? How much?
I think everyone should write the networks. If the fans overwhelm the networks with letters that demand another season. Eventually it will spark hope for the series and someone will see all the potential ratings that are being passed up. So everyone, start writing and let’s make season 2 of constantine a reality!!
I would have loved for a second season and will be purchasing the first. After meeting Matt Ryan I felt even closer to the world and it made me try my hardest to keep it above water. I don’t believe that it is over yet, and i plan to keep supporting the show just as fans of Firefly did.
First Matt Ryan was on the good show Criminal minds suspect behavior. It gets cancelled now he stars in Constantine and it gets cancelled. Two great shows that get you watching and really into and both get cancelled.
Excellent series, good action and plot. The finale episode was a cliff-hanger. Please re-consider.
Why on earth the CW passed on this show which so obviously fits on their network (and happens to be from their parent company) is beyond me.
I would love to run a network because I would buy the rights to cancelled shows like the messengers, battle creek, the returned and of course Constantine. Could you imagine if these people who run these networks were around when the classic show’s like Gilligan’s island, all in the family, the Jefferson’s ect. These long running hit shows would have never existed. I see a lot of responses about these canceled shows so how do they figure out the ratings? Fire and hire people who would know a good show and don’t worry about reality TV.
Actually it doesn’t fit. The lead isn’t an eye candy. I mean compare it to SPN’s lead. You have to remember that the network still gets more female viewers despite their 2 highest rated show skewing male. Also the licensing fee was rumored to be 1.5 million. CW passed on Supergirl cause it was too expensive that’s why it landed on CBS. There is also no guarantee that it’ll get the same ratings on CW.
This is ridiculous. I am very upset that Constantine is being cancelled. I enjoyed watching the show. Why is it that when there is a good show on, it’s cancelled. I hope that another network picks it up for season two. The good shows get cancelled while there these stupid cartoon shows are still on. What the heel are they thinking. Please bring it back or somebody pick it up.
VERY VERY SAD NEWS INDEED! Great show! Great Actors! Great Characters! just like tomorrow people and so many more of my shows I love! GONE! SAD INDEED! I am sorry! You all will be missed by me greatly !!!!! : ((
This is totally wrong! Every time there is a good solid show on TV it gets cancelled! I am tired of watching these reality shows, gays and lesbians etc crap shows. I like well written action, scifi, solid story lines, thinking and inspiring in thought shows. I am at my wits end, I will have to find old shows and movies to buy to satisfy my thirst. Constantine is a good show with good actors and writers. You guys screwed up once again!
Good riddance. I never liked that shows and its movie.
My favourites have all been cancelled, Constantine, Stalker, Surviving Jack, and there is nothing to replace them.
it’s sad. They’re cancelling good shows but are so desperate they’re bring back Full House, Heroes, Coach, and whatever other shows they think they can rinse and repeat.
Programming has some real goofball executives.
Hey come on con now I love Constantine why I love that show .. my 3 fav shows got the ax
Constantine
copper
Atlantis what the hell. all these shows were great . I just don’t no what to do and ay nymore
Come on now! Constantine is a really good show but because it’s different it gets cancelled. If he was gay or there was a lesbian it would probably get renewed. Most reality tv shows suck and much of NBC’s lineup needs help. NBC execs have their heads up their ass.
I’m really disappointed that Constantine couldn’t find a buyer. If I were with sy fly or fx, I would have bought this series in a heartbeat.but unfortunately I have no power over this. I truly believe that this show can be a cult classic. Networks are just way too impatient with new shows anymore. Just think of years back when shows were not getting the ratings that could have been cancelled that turned out to run for 8+ year’s.
Obviously the networks prefer either instant hits with teens or ‘reality’ tv shows where they can hire even cheaper talent to put on a circus act.
