Why was Counterpart cancelled? Recently, Starz boss Jeffrey Hirsch discussed the network’s decision to end the TV show after two seasons, Deadline reports.
The sci-fi spy drama stars JK Simmons as Howard Silk, a low-level bureaucrat who discovers a major secret while working for the UN in Germany. The cast also includes Olivia Williams, Harry Lloyd, Nicholas Pinnock, Nazanin Boniadi, and Sara Serraiocco.
During this year’s TCA summer press conference, Hirsch explained why Starz decided to cancel Counterpart, saying:
Counterpart was a great show, we had great partners in MRC and Justin is a great writer, but it was a very complicated show, a very male show. We had picked that show up and made a two season commitment before we’d honed in on this premium female strategy.”
What do you think? Have you seen Counterpart? Would you have watched a third season?
I really enjoyed Counterpart and will miss watching the show. It was complicated, with fantastic characters, and interesting plot lines. I’m curious to see how you will proceed with your female strategy, I like Vida, but some of the other shows coming up I’m not sure about. I am a female , by the way, and not in your 18- whatever demographic, but I enjoy all types of genres. Thank goodness for the library and Netflix who don’t pander. Thank you Justin Marks for an excellent show… I’ll be looking for more from you.
My wife and I just started watching the series that we recorded. We are enjoying it so far and we are disappointed to hear that it has been canceled. Every time we find a good series that has substance it gets canceled for some lame reasons. Hopefully someone else will pick it up.
Oh come on…is there no room for ‘complicated’ storylines that actually require to think more than the thousand vacuous reality tv shows?! Really? Really?
“A very male show”?
I think that mouth engaged before brain got into gear when that was said.
You could always added female characters if your reasoning for cancelling one of my favorite shows was too many male characters.
I can’t believe you are cancelling Counterpart after only two seasons. It was an awesome series. Please reconsider.
Please don’t cancel!
As a female, I find the reason stated for cancelling Counterpart extremely insulting! It is/was one of the best shows on television. I loved the complicated plot and the fantastic cast. Obviously, people who enjoy watching shows that make you think aren’t in their demographic. Shame on them! I too hope another network will have the foresight to pick up this truly great show.
Best show ever, only a fool would cancel it. Hopefully some wise person/company will pick it up.
The level of sexism in that explanation is appalling. Apart from the fact that I am a woman who loved that show, they are implying that women can’t appreciate complicated plotlines! Are we just supposed to look pretty and appreciate the snooze-fest that is Outlander? No reason to pay for Starz anymore. Really wish a quality network would pick it up.
Counterpart was my hands-down favorite TV show and I’m a woman–WTF Starz?! I would have watched it through all the seasons that were made and I’m appalled that it was cancelled. Especially for such a paltry reason. I really hoped that a network with more smarts would pick it up and was so disappointed when that didn’t happen.
I am a woman and I loved The show! What a poor reason to cancel such a wonderful show. I cancelled Starz as a result.
I loved Counterpart. I would have watched another season. Sometimes you had to really concentrate on which Howard was which but I enjoyed it.
I enjoyed the show & disappointed thatitus cancelled. The fact it “was a male” show should not be a factor. And I am a woman. A actually enjoy the masculine aspect of action shows, esp espionage, syfy. Boo to you for your decision.
Such a shame the show was cancelled. It was an entertaining show with a lot of plot twists.
