Why did CBS just cancel most of their new TV shows? Recently, network boss Kelly Kahl spoke with Deadline about the decision to cancel Broke, Carol’s Second Act, Tommy, and God Friended Me.
With the exception of God Friended Me, which wrapped its second season this spring, all the shows cancelled debuted during the 2019-20 season. CBS also cancelled Man with a Plan, which is currently airing its fourth season.
Speaking to Deadline, Kahl revealed it was a “tough” decision to cancel Broke, God Friended Me, Carol’s Second Act, and Tommy:
At the end of the day they weren’t doing the numbers we were hoping for, and despite liking them creatively, knowing timely decisions were upon us, we had to make tough calls to move on from those shows. You want to keep them all for another season; that’s what makes these calls tough. You invest a lot of time and effort and people put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into these shows, and when you have to say goodbye. It’s a tough call.”
What do you think? Did you watch any of CBS’ cancelled series? Would you have watched another season?
We loved Tommy and are angry it’s been cancelled! We hope that CBS will reconsider. Otherwise, we will not watch CBS any longer. To even have had a show with the wonderful Edie Falco should have been a great privilege for CBS.
I like the show Tommy, it was a very interesting show and with the time. Would love to see a second season, also carol’s second act was a funny show please bring it back.
We liked both Carol’s Second Act and Tommy. We are very disappointed they were cancelled. Not much worth watching left.
So upset with the cancellation of Tommy!!
Shouldn’t have cancelled God friendeds me nice show no violence or bad language made people think
God Friended Me was or is such a good, wholesome show. So of course you cancel it. It will be cheaper to put another reality show on the air. Figures. Man with a plan is another good show.
Tommy was intelligent and pioneering. From I could determine it was winning its time slot…found the show refreshing, innovative and exciting…shame it won’t have a 2nd season to bloom. I certainly was an avid viewer.
CBS had a good, clean show in God Friended Me. It was the only CBS show I watched. Goodbye CBS. Please another smarter network pickup this show.
My family and I would look forward to Sunday night with God friended me,NCIS los angles and ncis new Orleans, we will miss God friended me .
I really enjoyed Tommy I think the Networks never keep what older people like (over 50) Tommy never stood a chance. It was a good show and I believe that if it was brought back it would improve in the ratings. And Man With A Plan was always shoved around I enjoy the show.
Kelly Kahl saying the same old BS line every person senior in programming says for decades…and let’s not forget he was the #3 in programming when JERICHO was cancelled, renewed, held for months, then put back on in the middle of a writers strike in CBS’ worst time slot (Tuesday at 10pm) during primary season. They could have put it on At 9pm after NCIS but put BIG BROTHER in that slot instead. GFM could have been picked up for midseason – but to be fair, as a co-production between CBS Television Studios and Warner Brothers Television, it was at… Read more »
Despite GFM not being my typical style of TV, I actually didn’t despise it and quite enjoyed it.
God friended me should not have been canceled, it a really good show !!!
I think they should give Tommy a second season as I believe they should be given a chance to prove themselves. It is a great show.
God friended me should’ve been canceled it was a good show but I know lots of people don’t want to watch something if it’s not a lot of violance
Correct, it was a very good show and should have not been cancelled.
God Friended Me was one of our favorite shows—we bought every season and are very disappointed that it has been cancelled.
