Head Case revolves around a therapist who works with celebrities in Los Angeles. The performers sometimes have to deal with big professional disappointments, like when their TV shows are cancelled. Unfortunately, the actors on the Starz series now have firsthand knowledge of how that feels.
Alexandra Wentworth stars as Dr. Elizabeth Goode, an unapologetically frank therapist. Her unconventional methods have made her the “It” counselor in Hollywood and her practice has thrived. Regular performers on the series also include Steve Landesberg, Michelle Arthur, Candace Dean Brown, Rob Benedict, and Aris Alvarado.
The Starz series debuted in April of 2007 as 10-minute vignettes and evolved into half-hour episodes. Head Case became a showcase for performers who wanted to play themselves and get some “tough love” onscreen. Those that have been “helped” include Andy Dick, Greg Grunberg, Jeff Probst, Tori Spelling, Tom Sizemore, Jason Lewis, Sean Hayes, Jeff Goldblum, Jason Priestley, and Ralph Macchio.

Wentworth once commented, “The guest stars love the improv aspect of the show… They are given the chance to add their own dialogue, which hardly ever happens [on other shows], and is a breath of fresh air for them.”
When the third season of Head Case was announced, Stephan Shelanski, Starz’s executive vice president of programming, said, “Head Case was our first original half-hour comedy to debut on Starz and we are all excited to see it grow alongside our ever-expanding slate of top notch original TV programming… The true strength of this show stems from Ali Wentworth’s natural comedic instincts and the ability to offer our talent an open forum, where improvised dialogue and creativity are always encouraged. The final result is an eccentric, unconventional, unpredictably hilarious TV series, which we are proud to air on Starz.”
Those warm feelings seem to have faded over time unfortunately. The season three finale, which aired on May 22, 2009, has turned out to be the show’s last installment. Critic Rob Owen recently confirmed the cancellation with the cable channel. Episode 28, which guest-stars Jerry Seinfeld, is the end of the show.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Head Case won’t be back for another season?

Still so mad, I wonder if any other channel would pick it up. I did cancel Starz and now have HBO. Still in shock…..now the originals on Starz stink! I hope Crash doesn’t MAKE IT NEXT SEASON.. I watched it only because I watched it last season…bored ,bored but watched to the end and then decided I probably won’t watch it when it comes back! Such a slow moving did I say boring storylines. We want Head Case back!!!!!! And yes watched one on demand and didn’t stop, I watched every episode that day and continues follwing it! Alexandra Wentworth… Read more »
PLEASE BRING HEAD CASE BACK!!!!!! This is the problem with television. The most TERRIBLE shows are able to survive season after season, but quality programming like Head Case, that actually encompasses intelligent comedy, are always the first on the chopping block. This is ridiculous! C’MON!!!!
It’s tragic. I’ve been waiting and it’s one of the shows that makes me want to keep cable. Please come back come back come back!!
I am a big fan of Ali Wentworth. I hate to see the show cancelled, though at times the progressing raunchiness of some of the other characters’ dialogue was uncomfortable. (For example: when Dr. Goode was going on a date and got into the date’s car, then an ex-boyfriend or man she had dated previously and his date came out of the movie theater or some building and walked up to Dr. Goode’s date’s car where the date had been very gross in what he talked about and what he said since Dr. Goode first got into his car. That… Read more »
They always cancel the good ones. Wait a few years until the DVD sales boom and then maybe it will come back. I guess actual talent has nothing on reality tv.
Very sorry to see this one go.
Oh, I am bereft that “Head Case” won’t be back! I just happened upon it this past year and greedily devoured each episode. There were so many rip snorting, belly hurtin’, rolling on the floor and nearly peeing in my pants moments! Everyone’s reactions were sublime, superb, and brilliant! This show was intelligent, very real in a slyly shallow manner, and witty in the most brain enhancing ways. It was in the same class as “Arrested Development.” Isn’t there ANY OTHER STATION out there that might like to pick this series up (Comedy Channel, Lifetime, Bravo, HELLO?!) and add life… Read more »
the only reason I have Starz……..I am now cancelling it..Guess I will get Hbo! Crash was good this season but not as great as Head case!!!!!!!!!
I discovered this show via Netflix auto play and absolutely got hooked. Alexandra Wentworth is an amazing comedienne and the rest of the characters are just perfect as well. Absolutely one of the funniest shows on. Starz folks should reconsider giving this show another chance. Given more press about it, it could show up Curb Your Enthusiasm no problem.
I just discovered this show last week and I have watched all the ones available on ON DEMAND. It is one of the funniest shows I have ever seen. If there is any petition I can sign so that it is shopped around to other networks, send it to me. I am so disappointed it has been cancelled. The improvisation is just great and Wentworth sounds like a lot of therapists who tell you that you are fine until you decide you don’t need them anymore and then they tell you what a sick person you are. I can’t believe… Read more »
bummer!!! LOVE the show!!!
wemtworth is too funny!!! gonna miss head case alot!!!
Please reconsider giving them a 4th season. She is great.
Well, this is a very bad move. I loved this show. It’s one of the few intelligent comedies on television. You felt like you were an insider to all the jokes. All Landesberg would have to do is give a look, like Jack Benny, and it got a huge laugh in this house. His subtle humor is brilliant. It had a nice blend of brains and lunacy. What was the programming department thinking? Hopefully, they will shop this winner around to another network.
This show is hilarious! Alexandra Wentworth is a treasure. The humor is edgy and again, just hilarious. I’m sorry the show was cancelled. I will cherious each epsiode I watch.
yes, i am devastated that this show was cancelled. it is absolutely the funniest show ever made. I don’t think that it got the exposure it deserved as I stumbled on it. most americans, if they knew about it, would have watched it and loved it. i cannot believe starz cancelled it. there is not another show that comes as close to being so intellectually truly funny.
