Despite being on the cancellation bubble once again, CBS is sticking with Life in Pieces. The network has renewed the Thursday night TV show for a fourth season.
The single-camera comedy follows four branches of the Short family tree. Although they’re a big happy clan, that doesn’t mean there are no awkward moments amidst their funny and moving milestones. The cast includes Dianne Wiest, James Brolin, Zoe Lister-Jones, Colin Hanks, Angelique Cabral, Thomas Sadoski, Betsy Brandt, Dan Bakkedahl, Niall Cunningham, Holly J. Barrett, Giselle Eisenberg, and Hunter King.
A Look at the Ratings:
Unlike most series whose ratings have seen declines, total viewer numbers have actually increased for Life in Pieces during its third season. The season is averaging a 1.12 rating in the 18-49 demo and 6.56 million viewers.
Last year, the CBS sitcom averaged a 1.26 rating in the 18-49 demo and 6.12 million viewers. That’s an 11% decline in the demo but an increase of 7% in viewership this year.
While the ratings are positive, CBS doesn’t own the show so the network had to once again hammer out a deal with producing studio 20th Century Fox Television.
All told, today CBS cancelled two TV shows: Superior Donuts and Scorpion. The network also renewed five series: Criminal Minds (season 14); Man With a Plan (season three); Life in Pieces (season four); Instinct (season two); and Big Brother: Celebrity Edition (season two).
UPDATE: CBS has cancelled Kevin Can Wait and has renewed Elementary for season seven.
What do you think? Do you watch Life in Pieces? Are you glad the comedy is coming back for a fourth season? Would you have been upset if the show had been cancelled?
A very enjoyable show that appeals to a diverse age group. Very funny. I hope it will be back. It has not been promoted very much.
Everyone who watches loves it. I blame CBS for the lack of advertising. I have yet to see one commercial for this show since it began. The local radio talk show plugged it quite a bit at the beginning but CBS needs to step up it’s game and get the word out!
I love Life In Pieces. Please don’t cancel it!
I love Life in Pieces. Please renew it

A fun show to watch and glad it is returning and it is getting better!!!
Love this show! One of the best examples of good writing that exists anywhere on TV. Too many great shows have been cancelled for no obvious reason so don’t let this one be one of them. TV sorely lacks good quality uplifting programming these days.
I think Life in Pieces is one of the best sitcoms to come along in a good while. James Brolin is fantastic in his role. All of the actors are great, from the children to their great grandmother w/her 30-something boyfriend, but I think Mr. Brolin is by far the funniest, w/excellent timing. Every episode seems better than the one before, and we all find something to relate to in our families. I don’t know why CBS has delayed the 4th season so long; especially since it’s ratings were better last season than the one before. If Life in Pieces… Read more »
