A political thriller, Madam Secretary stars Téa Leoni, Tim Daly, Sara Ramirez, Željko Ivanek, Keith Carradine, Sebastian Arcelus, Patina Miller, Geoffrey Arend, Erich Bergen, Kathrine Herzer, Wallis Currie-Wood, and Evan Roe. The drama follows the shrewd, determined Elizabeth McCord (Leoni). As U.S. Secretary of State, she battles office politics, while driving diplomacy and negotiating global deals.
Elizabeth was once a CIA analyst, who exited that post for ethical reasons. She later returned to public life, at the request of President Conrad Dalton (Carradine). He values her apolitical leanings, knowledge of the Middle East, flair for languages, and unconventional thinking. Elizabeth is married to Henry (Daly), a former theology professor who is now an intelligence operative. Together, they’re bringing up three children, which can really test her diplomatic skills.
The fifth season of Madam Secretary averaged a 0.56 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.41 million viewers. Compared to season four, that’s down by 9% and 12%, respectively.
Out of the 26 scripted CBS TV shows of the 2018-19 season, Madam Secretary is in 24th place in the demo and 18th place in total viewership.

I look forward to watching MS every week. Unfortunately, on our local CBS affiliate, it was too often not broadcast or time slot was moved due to sports or other one time specials being shown. This happened often enough that I got frustrated and stopped watching it on broadcast TV and started watching it on my computer a few days after Sunday. Still with commercials, but I wonder if this is part of the problem in getting more accurate ratings? Seems like everyone I know follows the show (self selecting sample of people) and they are also frustrated by this.
I ended up doing the same thing that you did Jake, except for watching it through On Demand on my TV, not my computer. I tried to DVR it, but that technology isn’t sophisticated enough to adjust for sports delays. I too am wondering if delayed watching due to a fluctuating schedule had a significant effect on the ratings.
Please someone — continue this by making it a new series picking up when Madam Secretary becomes Madam President!!! I want to see how she leads the country and tackles complex issues!!

One of the best shows on TV. While obviously fiction, nevertheless each episode is reasonably topical in world events. Makes it somewhat more ‘believable’ than most other series. My favorite show by a long shot.

Absolutely thrilling but thought provoking series. Gives today’s citizens a look at how the government works. However, Hollywood does dramatize some parts of the story line. Admire all actors participation in drama.
I like this show. Glad its being renewed. I’m not sure the pollyanna approach to international politics is very realistic, but if the series lasts long enough it could catch on. Thank you for giving us another season.
This series may not be very realistic, as we can only dream to have good, caring people in government…. but it is a QUALITY SHOW that I really look forward to & only wish it showed earlier.
