The original Magnum PI TV show, which ran on CBS from 1980 to 1988 and starred Tom Selleck in the title role, was a pretty big hit back in the days when there were far fewer choices and hence, much bigger audiences. Now that the Tiffany network has rebooted the Hawaii-set action-adventure series for a new generation, will it still burn up the Nielsen ratings? Will the new Magnum PI be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. *Status update below.
A CBS crime drama, Magnum PI stars Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill, Tim Kang, and Amy Hill. The mystery thriller centers on former Navy SEAL Thomas Magnum (Hernandez), who is back from Afghanistan and working as a private investigator. Magnum lives in a guest cottage on the Robin’s Nest estate in Oahu, where he also serves as a security consultant. With his team at the ready, a vintage Ferrari at his disposal, and his trademark aviator sunglasses, Magnum is always ready to crack the next case.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — typically around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
4/16 update: You can see the latest night’s ratings in context.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you like the Magnum PI TV series? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a second season on CBS?
*1/25/19 update: CBS has renewed the Magnum PI TV show for a second season.
Don’t renew…the new actors don’t fit the character development…it just isn’t realistic…
I was a big fan as a kid of the original series. A couple yesrs ago I binge watched every single show. After not seeing it for so many years, I was again addicted! Always hoped for a sequel to find out what the future held for magnum. Never got that but the next best thing is the new reboot! I’ve seen every eposode and I’m enjoying them very much. Wasn’t sure about higgy being a gal at first but now I’m totaly in love with her character. Hope the series continues long into the future. I also love seeing… Read more »
We were a little skeptical As we really enjoyed the original….. But….we really enjoy the show love the chemistry between the characters and have stoped comparing them to the old ones Really hoping it’s given a chance and not canceled
It has great cinematography but this reboot is drab, almost dreary, instead of lighthearted and fun-loving. It lacks everything that made the original fun: the charm of the Magnum character, the spirited dialogue, and the character interplay. The only bright spot is the female Higgins, not because she’s pretty, but because she has the intelligence and the charm of the original, with a female twist that is nice. Even then it is impossible to fill John Hillerman’s shoes. Same goes for Tom Selleck’s shoes. This reboot flops as badly as the Ghostbusters reboot. You simply cannot recreate the original characters… Read more »
I love Magnum. Please don’t cancel it we watch it every week. We love it love it love it love it!
I like this show so far, good cast, funny at times , I enjoyed episode 9 . All the characters showed emotional feelings .
Horrible. Nothing beats the original.
At first I wasn’t sure, stuck on the original Magnum PI, but now getting familiar with the characters and at times they remind me of the original show. They did a great job casting Perdita Weeks as Higgins, adding a strong female character to the mix. I don’t think a stuffy older man would have worked in the reboot. Good chemistry between her and Magnum and the rest of the characters. I am really enjoying the show. I hope it gets renewed!
Absolutely love this show and the cast members! I did not think it would be as good as the original but think it is better!!
Jay Hernandez does a great job.
Awesome show great cast.
I think the new Magnum holds it’s own and the characters are very likeable.
I think the 2018 Magnum P.I. CBS TV Show is fantastic and well done.
The reboot is awesome! You gotta go for a Season 2!
I like the new Magnum, I dont compare it to the original…I enjoy it for what it is, and so does my husband. I like the cast, too. Higgins is an interesting girl with great timing and a pretty look. The cast grows on you. Its refreshing to have a show like this to watch…I hope they keep it on the schedule. If they move it to another time-slot we will definitely still watch it, Monday night isn’t the easiest with Dancing with the Stars or the Bachelor so not sure why they plopped Magnum down there. For the Selleck… Read more »
Bring back Selleck and the older crew. Use his daughter’s character in a role.
