Maybe the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division rigged this one. Despite ratings similar to those that saw Once Upon a Time cancelled, ABC has renewed its Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD TV show for a sixth season of just 13 episodes.
An ABC sci-fi action adventure drama, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD stars Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, Henry Simmons, and Natalia Cordova-Buckley. From Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen, the series is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD: A Look at the Ratings
The fifth season of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD is averaging a 0.53 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 2.08 million viewers. Compared to season four, that’s down by 28% in the demo and down by 11% in viewers. Find out how Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD stacks up against other ABC TV shows.
Moving Forward
Word is that the sixth season renewal came down to the wire. While the show is weak in traditional ratings, it does well in DVR viewing and is a strong seller internationally. It also helps to keep the Marvel brand in front of audiences and the network didn’t have any new Marvel shows in development for next season. Marvel’s Inhuman’s was cancelled last week.
The network has ordered 13 episodes for a likely mid-season run. It’s unknown if Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD will continue to air on Friday nights or if this will be the final season.
What do you think? Are you still watching Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD TV series? Did you think it would ABC would cancel or renew it for season six?
I’ve followed the show since S1.E1. It’s definitely gotten a bit more cosmic in scope. Beyond what I’d expect from SHIELD. Comments:
1) Introducing then deleting whole swaths of characters is on the one hand tough to follow. On the other, you learn not to invest in these latter day “red shirt” characters.
2) I’m fine with no spin-off characters. Spin offs, with rare exception, always seem to be a step down from the original show.
3) A half season worries me. Will they be phoning it in because the end of season 5 was the spiritual wrap up?
Love the show, but find the cure for Coulson he needs to be there. Will watch
either way but not the same. Eagerly waiting for season 5 to come out on DVD
to buy, already have 1-4 now so I can watch whenever.
We love this show and are so happy to see that it has been renewed! Please keep it coming!
This season was terrible, I had a hard time watching each and every episode. Did you have new writers for this season? I kept waiting for this story line to end, it was so bad I almost gave up, but being a fan of the series, I watched dutifully to the bitter end. The writers for this season need a time out! I’m hoping for better story telling next season. Great cast and show premise, but the writing needs a major overhaul. Doesn’t surprise me that the season tanked in the ratings. Good Luck
I have loved this show from the beginning…great character relationships, good acting, and stories – what’s not to like? Phil Coulson cannot be dead for Season 6, though, he is the heart of the S.H.I.E.L.D. team…
Thank you, Thank you…. THANK YOU ABC, for renewing this MARVELOUS, EXCITING AND INTELLIGENT SHOW!
Being a MARVELS/SHIELD FAN, I akways DVR this show and NEVER miss one episode!
I just hope that they will find a way to save Phil Coulson, because without this caracters HEART AND SOUL, Agents Of Shield are not “The Shield”.
I would still watch the show though, but my heart is morning this “Giant Of Shields”, and if Phil “really dies”, I will be un-consolable…..(Cannot think of it, without getting all choked up….)
THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN!!!

This is one of my favorite shows on tv! I usually DVR it (as I do with all of my favorite shows) because I’m unable to watch my shows until my 88 year old mother goes to bed (she hates sitting alone! And only likes tv land comedies – I’ve seen Golden Girl episodes at least 10 times! But with Alzheimer’s she doesn’t remember them) my shows are Marvel type (Supergirl, flash, arrow, dc legends, and of course Agents of Shields!) walking dead, supernatural, etc. these type of shows give me an escape from reality since I can’t get out… Read more »
Love this show, but I have to DVR it due to the airing at 7pm on Friday nights
Every show I watch is recorded and watched at a later date so I can skip commercials and/or binge watch. I think the ratings system has not caught up with viewers’ tendencies.
We don’t fit into the demographic that follows this show, but we find it suspenseful and the humor is enjoyable. Most enjoyable show on TV.
Well, of course it has a lot of DVR viewers when you put a show that’s aimed towards a younger demographic on Friday…
Glad it was renewed. It usually has a strong string or arc of 3-6 shows per season that make the season worthwhile. I wish they’d tie it into the MCU and a few more special effects rather than running around dark warehouse sets. But, it is what it is, eh?
Been watching from day one. We love it. We DVR all our shows. We like it on Fridays there is no other competitions or conflicts for DVR-ing.
This is wonderful news for easily the best “superhero” show on TV. With pure garbage like Arrow getting easy renewals, its nice to see an actual well written show to thrive among so much trash.
This was happy news for me! I have been enjoying this season’s episodes, and of course enjoyed all of the previous seasons. I’m intrigued how they will handle operating in a post Thanos’ snappening MCU.
The shows first season was horrible and the second season was below average. But it has picked up and the last 2 seaaons have been very good. I don’t blame casual fans for not lasting through 40 plus episodes to get to better story arcs.
They haven’t used the one thing that will get them ratings and that is put Daisy into the movies (or any legit movie characters on the show) Although i heard Colson will be in the Captain Marvel movie. I’m hoping the infinity war aftermath affects them.
