It looks like The Artful Detective TV show will be renewed for season 12 on Ovation TV, with a start date TBD. Back home in Canada, the series goes by the title The Murdoch Mysteries, on CBC, where the season 11 finale just aired, last week. Now, showrunner Peter Mitchell, writer Mary Pederson, and star Hélène Joy are already teasing the 12th installment.
An Ovation Victorian mystery drama, The Artful Detective stars Yannick Bisson, Hélène Joy, Jonny Harris, Thomas Craig, Lachlan Murdoch, Georgina Reilly, Kristian Bruun, Arwen Humphreys, and Mouna Traoré. The Canadian mystery drama centers on William Murdoch (Bisson) — a good-looking, innovative Toronto detective. Murdoch uses fingerprinting, UV Light, and trace evidence in his investigations. Working alongside him to crack the city’s grizzliest murders are pathologist Dr. Julia Ogden (Joy) and Constable George Crabtree (Harris) — Murdoch’s righthand man.
Greg David, of the Canadian website, TV, eh? talked to Mitchell, Pederson, and Joy discuss the season 11 finale and the upcoming 12th season. Check it out.
What excites you about Season 12?
Hélène Joy: I get excited because the writers always blow me away. I hear little rumblings about what Julia these things that Julia will be doing this year and I’m like, ‘Oh! Who would have thought?!’ Of course, I can’t tell you!
Peter, will there be a time jump between Season 11’s finale and Season 12’s debut?
Peter Mitchell: Yup. Normally, we pick it up three or four months later and I think that’s so we can start off on a fresh foot while doing some housekeeping as to what happened last year.
Any storylines you’re working on that you can talk about?
Peter Mitchell: We have an idea that Julia and Murdoch might be writing a book together, which could be fun. We might actually find George’s girl of his dreams this year. There might be some interesting developments in the Brackenreid household and the wedding bells will indeed ring for Henry Higgins. I think we might have Alexander Graham Bell back—he’s a fun character—and introduce the architect Frank Lloyd Wright … a couple historical figures we haven’t seen yet and a couple we’ve seen in the past. We’re just getting started.
While Ovation hasn’t announced a season 12 renewal for The Artful Detective, sometimes US cable networks don’t announce renewals for the Canadian series they run. We find out about it, when they announce the new season premiere date. Ovation first picked up the series in 2013, and since then has run all of the seasons, to date.

Love this series!!!! It has everything — impossibly handsome lead actor (Yannick Bisson), beautiful co-star (Helene Joy), costumes, history, humour and oh, yes, a fine mysterythere too. Something for everyone–
Love the series.. up to season 7 which is all Netflix ever carries. Wife’s a dedicated Crabtree fan, I lean toward Brackenreid , myself. Right now we’re so far behind we can see ourselves up ahead..
I love the show can’t wait tell season 12 starts I hope it goes on because I would love it if it went on for years the characters are great I would love it if George could get married to.
Good news!! I like this series very much. I like of the histories, crew, writers and all cast, specially Hélène Joy, she’s a excellent actress. The show is pleasant and funny! Cool! Expecting next season!
I thoroughly enjoy this series. The characters have grown as the show has continued. They have not become stale.
I love Murdoch Mysteries. I watch online, as our local stations are about 5 seasons behind. This series is intelligent, not the drivel crime dramas of other networks. Thank you for keeping the show conforming to a higher level.
I love this series. I can get it on both CBC and Ovation. Please continue to renew this series until you absolutely can’t think of any ways to be creative for new episodes.

I LOVE this show and look forward to every episode. Is it possible that Dr. Emily Grace will return and she and George Crabtree will become a couple again? It seemed they still cared deeply for each other when she left for England.
Murdoch Mysteries is one of those rare, brilliant programs where the stars, writers and production crew create magic. I stopped watching TV in 1984, but began subscribing to Netflix for the sole purpose of having access to Murdoch Mysteries.
My husband and I just couldn’t wait for the next season so we got Acorn. We love the characters and story line.
