CBS‘ time in paradise has come to an end. The network has cancelled NCIS: Hawai’i, so viewers won’t see a fourth season.
A police procedural drama series, the NCIS: Hawai’i TV series stars Vanessa Lachey, Alex Tarrant, Noah Mills, Yasmine Al-Bustami, Jason Antoon, Tori Anderson, and Kian Talan. LL Cool J is a special guest star. In the story, Jane Tennant (Lachey) is the first female Special Agent in Charge of NCIS Pearl Harbor. She has thrived and risen through the ranks by equal parts confidence and strategy in a system that has pushed back on her every step of the way. Her unwavering team of specialists includes junior field agent Lucy Tara (Al-Bustami); cyber intelligence specialist Ernie Malik (Antoon); second-in-command Jesse Boone (Mills); Defense Intelligence Agency Special Agent Kate Whistler (Anderson); and Kai Holman (Tarrant), a newer NCIS agent. They sometimes work with NCIS Senior Field Agent (Cool J) from Los Angeles. Tennant and her team balance duty to family and country while investigating high-stakes crimes involving military personnel, national security, and the mysteries of the island paradise itself.
Airing on Monday nights, the abbreviated third season of NCIS: Hawai’i averages a 0.35 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.24 million viewers. Compared to season two, that’s up by 1% in the demo and up by 4% in viewership in the live+same day ratings (includes DVR playback through 3:00 AM). It’s the network’s only scripted series to see growth year-to-year.
While the series outperformed other dramas that have been renewed, it was also likely more expensive to produce.
It’s also worth noting that CBS will have a very full schedule next season. The network renewed most of its current shows (including SWAT, which was supposed to end next month) and has committed to several new programs. Some of these were ordered for 2023-24 but were delayed due to last year’s industry strikes. New shows premiering for 2024-25 include Matlock, NCIS: Origins, Poppa’s House, Watson, and the Young Sheldon spin-off.
The 2024-25 season will be the first time CBS won’t have a Hawaii-based drama on the schedule in 14 years. The reboot of Hawaii Five-0 debuted in 2010 and ran until 2020. The reboot of Magnum PI began in 2018 and ran on CBS until 2022. NCIS: Hawai’i debuted in 2021.
The de facto series finale of NCIS: Hawai’i will air on May 6th. While the episode won’t give the series any closure, word is that viewers won’t be left with a big unresolved cliffhanger either.
What do you think? Have you been watching this Monday night series on CBS? Are you disappointed NCIS: Hawai’i was cancelled instead of renewed for a fourth season?
I read on another site there is a petition on change.org to save the show. It’s under Entertainment.
Wow interesting, good update. If only they would lower the costs in Hawaii & save it would be awesome. Or get it on Paramount Plus or a sister of CBS since so many new projects are coming next season also. And really hope Vanessa & the team get to keep their jobs in this one too.
IT IS NOT RIGHT TO CANCEL NCIS HAWAII. IF CANCELLED BECAUSE OF THE COST TO FILM DOES NOT MAKE SINCE. THEY NEVER HAD THAT MANY SPECIAL EFFECTS DONE ON THERE LIKE THEY DID EVERY WEEK ON NCIS LA THAT I REALLY MISS, BUT UNDERSTAND THE COST THERE. I ONLY HOPE NCIS SYDNEY DOES STAY ON CBS NORMAL TV NOW AND DOES NOT GO TO PARAMOUNT PLUS LIKE IT WAS SUPPOSE TO DO IN THE FIRST PLACE. WHY BECAUSE THERE WILL BE NO CROSS OVERS DONE ANYMORE THAT MAKES SINCE UNLESS THEY CROSS OVER TO NCIS SYDNEY. WHY BECASUE UNLESS YOU… Read more »
Ncis Hawaii is really a good show forget about ncis origins I don’t think any body cares about Gibbs early days I sure don’t. Keep NCIS Hawaii the cast there is doing a great job
Contact CBS if you feel it’s a bad decision. The could lose LL Cool J and save money. Vanessa and the rest of the crew are doing a good job and ratings are decent. Cancel Sydney with actors you can’t understand what they are saying. Forget Origins and also Tony and Ziva. Again, make your feelings known to CBS.
Is it just coincidence or have they cancelled all shows filmed in Hawaii (5-o, Magnum, NCIS HI)? They are also cancelling StarTrek Discovery (Paramount+) and almost eliminated SWAT. SEAL Team has at least one more season. We’ve lost the various opps to have crossovers and all of the good CBS action shows with diversity seem seem to slowly be eliminated. Hopefully CBS leaves the FBI trio alone. I’ve followed the original NCIS from the very beginning but I’d rather see them continue Hawaii rather than give us Origins and/or Tony/Ziva unless they will give us all of them. malama pono… Read more »
I am mad they got canceled. I hope someone other than ABC pick them up. Ut not streaming. Should have not cancel them and mistake.
It is a great show and most of the people I know really enjoy it and are disappointed that it is not being renewed.

really sorry to hear that NCIS: HAwaii is cancelled
Typical CBS…most likely ending on a cliffhanger and not giving the fans a proper ending. This is so CBS. What a dumpster fire.
This really sucks!! I love this show and as someone mentions they started an NCIS in Sydney. It certainly can’t be any cheaper to film there than in Hawaii.
I just saw last night on here that it was renewed, but the link didn’t work.
I can’t understand how they can keep all of these reality shows which serve no purpose. I enjoy all of these NCIS shows they are very entertaining.
I think this sucks. I love this show, actually ALL the NCIS shows. I was really pissed when they ended NCIS:LA, but was so happy to see Sam (LL Cool J) on Hawaii. They have a wonderful, diverse and compelling cast. I think CBS is doing a disservice to its loyal fans. Allegedly it’s too expensive to shoot in Hawaii but then they went to Sydney? Why? Is it cheaper? And when Hawaii Five-0, Magnum and NCIS were all filming in Hawaii, there were crossovers with actors, and they made sense. NCIS:Hawaii is UP in ratings. Naturally CBS cancels it.… Read more »
So mad & upset once again CBS! Loved this one, the headquarters are so nice looking than the DC one is. Vanessa Lachey made history & awesome cast too. Good numbers the viewers watched I’ve read recently & darn. Just sad of these costs now & can’t believe the costs were too much to pay in Hawaii & get it. Just hope those guys will appear on the other ones of the franchise & keep them returning too.
